  • Tidings of comfort and joy

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Dec 24, 2014

For two weeks the words of that Christmas song floated through my mind. The chorus won’t leave me alone. Think about it. The whole thing is a strange set up. First angels show up. Then they say, Hey. Dude, chill. Don’t be scared. Think about it. If angels showed up at my door, I don’t care what words they used, I’d be terrified. Typically angels might say they bring good news. But what generally comes into play, at least before anything good happens, think about it, long tr... Full story

  • Our View: Hi-Liners who care

    Updated Dec 24, 2014

We in the newspaper business often spend our time covering the dark side of society — the fires, arrests and political corruption. But we also spend a lot of time dealing with some really great people. Many are the people who stay in the background because that’s the way they want it. They volunteer in the community, they go the extra mile, they help people when no one is watching. They are the last ones to want to be mentioned in the newspaper. As we look back at 2014, we reflect on just some of these people we worked wit... Full story

  • George Ferguson Column: Remembering the true spirt of sports and Christmas

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 24, 2014

A few days ago, my wife jokingly asked if I had forgotten the meaning and spirit of Christmas. I’ll admit, at the time, we were having a conversation about Christmas presents. Maybe she wasn’t kidding. But, kidding or not, it certainly got me thinking. Maybe I do lose sight of the spirit of Christmas at times. Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 24, 2014

Entering the 2014-15 boys basketball season, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were a bit of an afterthought in the District 9C. Part of that had to do with defending Class C state champion Box Elder. New teams like Chester/J-I and Fort Benton/Geraldine also took attention away from the T-Birds. But with players like Sterling White Cow, an All-District player in the 9C and an All-Conference player in the Northern C, the T-Birds have a shot to do some damage. HLP opened the... Full story
