  • Making the holiday spirit bright

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 23, 2016

In this busy time of year — while I wait for the the first wave of crowds to run out of money and the second wave to get their gifts exchanged post-Christmas — so I can do my holiday shopping, I’ve spent some time reading the news recreationally. For fun. I know, weird, right? But this is what I learned: Epa.gov says that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day people in the U.S. increase their household waste production by 25 percent, which is about 1 million tons extra ...

  • City boy enjoys small town Christmas

    Paul Dragu|Updated Dec 23, 2016

Before moving to Havre, I didn’t believe small towns existed, much less small town Christmases. It was a myth, all of it, fantasies invented and romanticized in Sherwood Anderson and Larry Watson books. Sure, I’d driven through quaint southern small towns and devoured the most delicious, succulent, fresh-smoked homemade Tennessee barbecue ever known to mankind. But the southern small towns I passed through weren’t real. For all I knew, they were part of a set, a real-life “Truman Show.” None of the people I exchanged...

    Updated Dec 23, 2016

You know, Lord, as You reckon time, just a couple of days ago a Star was born: 2 Peter 3:8: (“Beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousands years, and a thousand years as one day.”) This unique Star’s purpose? Magi saw the new Star in the east and followed it. Matthew 2:1-2. “behold, Magi from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? Fill your reservoir so that rivers of living water will flow out of you and bless your listeners. As you grow in your pastoral experience, you will sense the leading of the Holy Spirit more clearly. You will find yourself drawn to particular topics to study. Remember that we preach Jesus and we attempt to have our listeners choose to go on with...

Mark 1:1 Out our way, Goliath and I made a deal for this week's column. You know how he hates the reindeer ears I made him wear one year for bell ringing with the Salvation Army. Well, he agreed to wear a Santa hat if I wore the antlers and so, if the picture comes out, that is what you will see. It is our special Christmas gift to you, or as some prefer, our "holiday" gift. In many public places, Merry Christmas has been replaced with Happy Holidays because the latter is...

The Havre High girls basketball team may not have beaten Great Falls High Thursday night in Swarthout Fieldhouse, but the Blue Ponies competed from start to finish in a game that caused more stress for the Lady Bison than some expected. • Blue Ponies ground the Eagles

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 23, 2016

There isn't much of a rivalry on the wrestling mat when it comes to the Havre Blue Ponies and Lewistown Eagles going head-to-head. And, when the two teams hooked up to close out 2016, Havre again didn't give the Eagles a chance to make it a rivalry.
