Some local schools are on alert or closing today in response to a threat to safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary” share on the social media platform TikTok. The local schools note that the post appears to be part of a national trend on TikTok and did not originate in the local districts, but is circulating in the local schools. Hays-Lodge Pole Schools announced the district schools are closed today because of the posts. “The district has decided to cancel school for the safety of all students,” a post on the...
Staff and wire report Local law enforcement is telling people they need to celebrate the holidays safely, or they may face the consequences of drinking and driving. “As you make plans to celebrate with friends and family, also make plans to have a safe ride home by designating a sober driver or or using a rideshare service,” a release from Havre Police Department said. “Don’t spend your holidays in jail, or worse in an ambulance.” The release said increased law enforcement patrols will be out in Havre and Hill County in...

When your life is rich with irony and sarcasm, it’s easy to become jaded and hardened with the world, like having a nasty case of calcium buildup or plaque over the soul, so I was kind of surprised this week to find out that I could still be surprised. It is, of course, ridiculous — after more than half a century living in Montana — to be surprised by winter, so perhaps it’s an intelligence issue. I don’t know. Yes, logically, I know it’s coming. spring, summer, fall, winte...
Editor’s note: Clara Laird provided this statement she prepared to read during this week’s Havre Public Schools board meeting but was not allowed to read, with the board saying public comment cannot be made on personnel issues. I am here to speak on behalf of Coach Ryan Gatch, and why he should continue to be the Head Football Coach at Havre High School. Havre Public Schools has a motto, Tradition of Exc...
It is finally time for the U.S. Senate to pass the Build Back Better legislation, and it can’t come soon enough. Many families have not financially recovered from the pandemic, and with the cost of gas, food, and other necessities rising worldwide, people are really struggling. This legislation will improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Montanans. Here are a few of the most critical ways the bill will reduce poverty in Montana: Child Tax Credit. Out our way, one can see for miles in all directions, provided one chooses to look. One of my favorite memories was on one of Charlie and my excursions on the Tiger Ridge to check on the herd. On this occasion we rode up on a slightly higher than normal ridge at the north end of the pasture. It gave us a pretty fair view of the area and Charlie pointed to a distant cloud further north and said, “It’s raining in Canada.” Yup — though the border was many miles away, from wh...
I am always amazed at what happens when I take time to pray with my wife Jan. We were praying this morning (Tuesday the 14th of December) and while I was praying, I was also contemplating the homily I needed to prepare for our St. Jude School Mass on Wednesday morning the 15th of December. I always struggle with homilies for the school Masses because - well let's just say there seems to be a lack of enthusiasm exhibited by the young people and the readings very often seem...
You know, Lord, mending day happens; there are sox, shirts, jeans, you name it and it probably needs mending. Besides clothing, there is upholstery, fences, relationships, and even broken hearts to mend. Mending clothing isn’t all that complicated, but, on mending day, aren’t we ever so thankful that You did not give us a dozen children. We’re thankful and grateful for the three girls (or are there five girls now?) who sort of call us substitute parents even though they were...

Now the young Ponies get ready to host a back-to-back against Glendive and Sidney this weekend at the Havre High...

Coming off the loss, HHS head coach Dustin Kraske knows that the Ponies will have to improve on the court as they begin Northeast A competition. "(We got to) keep playing better...
Has there ever been a bigger day in Bozeman? Maybe the aftermath of the 1984 Division I-AA national championship game, but that was a long time ago. In fact, it's been an agonizingly long 37 years since the Montana State Bobcats played for, and last won a national championship. And while it's only been two long years since the Bobcats last went this far in the FCS playoffs, that 2019 semifinal appearance at North Dakota State doesn't even compare to what's about to happen...
