I would love something more environmentally friendly. Could you please give me a solar panel? You can just leave it on the roof! How is the North Pole? I’ve been worried about you. Do you have “winter?” I know our glaciers are melting faster than scientists thought. Here in Montana, they are really shrinking. One of our Congressmen said that h...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Weirding my way into winter

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Dec 15, 2023

No longer can I remain in denial. I am an addict. I am addicted to sunlight. When I lived in Poulsbo, Washington, on the Kitsap Peninsula where it rained 10 months of the year, I remember how hard it was by February to keep up my spirits. That is normal behavior, pretty much. Now, these years later, after a mere couple (2) cloudy days with rain, and I begin to wonder if a Prozac Big Gulp would really work. Having grown up in a country of constant drought, I love the rain....

  • Montana's mail woes: A challenge to democracy

    Updated Dec 15, 2023

In our vast and often brutal Montana landscape, USPS workers frequently brave blizzards and slick October and November roads to deliver election ballots. Too frequently, their most challenging battle is against a lack of resources. Postal delays are more than an inconvenience; they threaten the accuracy and security of Montana’s elections. In the early 2010s, rumors of closing the Missoula and Kalispell sorting centers stirred concern among Montanans, rightfully so. Today, as the USPS grapples with hiring troubles and r...

Isaiah 40:1 - "Every valley shall be raised up and every hill and mountain leveled, the twisted places straight and uneven ground leveled ... ." Out our way, I am amazed at how the cattle trails always seem to be the easiest roads to follow. Occasionally we have new pastures as Big Mike will lease out different grazing grounds, but Charlie rides point and guides us in the best and easiest route. He knows where the water is and the gate that opens into fresh pasture, and also...

  • Pastor's Corner: A time to ... wait?

    Updated Dec 15, 2023

When you are waiting for something special, time seems to come to a stand-still. For children anticipating Christmas, it can feel like an eternity waiting for Santa to make his world-tour. For adults rushing to get every last holiday detail in place, Christmas can come too soon. And yet the span of days for the children is the same span of days for adults, making our experience of time relative to our frame of reference. Einstein had a theory when it came to our experience of...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Dec 15, 2023

You know, Lord, the month of December usually puts us in a giving mood, right? For some folks it's typically cash, but it needn't be cash; clothes, shoes, socks, also toys could also be donated, as well as art, or like one friend we heard about, he gave an automobile to a gal who had lost her car in a wreck.
