We raised $100,000 this year with the special auction, the beautifully decorated trees, and all the other generously donated items, trips, and experiences. Thanks to a matching grant from the Murdock C...

BILLINGS (AP) — Advocates for women urged the Montana Supreme Court on Friday to strike down a one-month prison sentence for a former high school teacher convicted of raping a freshman student. In a friend of the court brief, six advocacy groups told justices they should send the case to a new judge for re-sentencing. Judge G. Todd Baugh in Billings said in August that the 14-year-old victim appeared "older than her chronological age." He sentenced former Billings teacher Stacey Rambold to 15 years in prison with all but one...

On a Friday night in late November Eric McLain is out on the frozen rink of the Havre Ice Dome setting up for what has to be one of the area's most obscure sports: curling. Though curling is most notably seen on U.S. television during the winter Olympics, the Ice Dome has had an adult league with about 10 teams for two season, McLain said, and is heading into the third with possibly more teams. • Bell ringers strive to meet goal

    John Kelleher|Updated Dec 13, 2013

Salvation Army volunteers and staffers have worked hard and the Havre community has opened its heart, said Trina Crawford, the Salvation Army's executive director. So far, the Red Kettle Campaign has raised $9,386.27 this Christmas season. That's about $800 more than was raised by this time last year, she said. That's not bad, considering that some of the locations were shut down during the bitter cold last week. But the bad news she said, is that this year the calendar is...

  • Keep Feds out of sage grouse plan

    Elsie Arntzen|Updated Dec 13, 2013

With the federal government declaring sage grouse “warranted” for listing as an endangered species, Montana must act before the feds yet again interfere with the management of our state. Bureaucrats in D.C. and Helena all too often ignore the voices of citizens who live and work on the land each day, but a true Montana sage grouse solution simply cannot overlook the property rights of local landowners when coming up with an acceptable plan. Tying up land in bureaucratic red tape and permits only does a disservice to lan...

  • It's a booty-full life lesson

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 13, 2013
    1

I’ve long held that I learn the best life lessons about being a better human from my animals. Not that I spend time staring into my dog’s brown eyes pondering the existential status of the universe or basing important life choices on how many times my cat twines himself around my legs before tripping me or reading my future from my horses’ manure like Asian tea leaves. Occasionally, though, a lesson presents itself. I give you: The Booty Lesson. My dog, Cooper, has thin skin...

The church will be puttin on its annual living Nativity scene. It is a moving experience. It reminds people of what most of us believe is the real meaning of Christmas. Laurel — Law enforcement officials often get a bad image. But think of Lewis and Clark County sheriff’s deputies and other area officials who thought nothing of going into a cold water stream north of Helen...

  • George Ferguson Column: Great moments in an intriguing football season

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 13, 2013

Every season, football just seems to get bigger and bigger. It seems to get put under a more powerful microscope. That’s probably because it’s the most popular sport in the U.S. right now, and it’s not even close anymore. Football on the Hi-Line, and across Montana is no exception to that standard. With each passing generation, it just seems like more and more people are becoming more and more passionate about the game of football. The football days on the Hi-Line are now i...

When the high school swimming season begins Saturday at the Havre Community Pool, there was something noticeably different about the Havre High boys and girls swim teams as they race into a new season. For the first time in two decades, legendary head coach Chris Inman isn't there … at least not coaching the Blue Ponies. After one of the most successful runs in MHSA history, Inman retired last spring, and is replaced by new head coach Jill Cammon. Cammon moved to Havre four y...
