    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 14, 2015

In today’s world of sports, success is always measured by a team winning its last game. Whether it’s the Super Bowl, a national championship in college or a state championship in high school, winning that last game is the measuring stick in this world of instant gratification. But for me, football is much more than winning. Maybe it’s because I’m 40 and I don’t play or coach the game, or maybe it’s because I get to cover the great game of football on all levels, and that’s...

  • The Christmas Experts

Paul Dragu, Havre Daily News|Updated Dec 11, 2015

If it were somehow possible to make a present-packed, candy-crammed, stocking-stuffed, family-filled Christmas holiday better, 7-year-old Aiden of Mrs. Wilkin's second-grade class would add trick or treating in the mix of the most popular holiday of the year. Lincoln-McKinley Primary School has no shortage of "Christmas specialists," Principal Bitz said, as she passed through a herd of chattering students on their way back from recess. Before imparting branches of knowledge fr...

  • View from the North 40: Winter brings out the best in me

    Pam Burke, Humor columnist|Updated Dec 11, 2015

To know me is to know that I have a contrariness to my nature. For better or worse. From birth till in death do I part. Some piece of me will yin to another’s yang, will yes because there was a no, will advocate the devil’s side. Yes, it will even prompt me to speak nice of my old nemesis, winter. I know that sounds like crazy talk from me, the person who once said that winter is a boil on the backside of existence. But I can assure you that, yes, I said nice things, genuinely...

He's been doing this for years - standing at the red kettle, ringing the bell and chatting with...

  • Out Our Way: Round bales

    John Bruington|Updated Dec 11, 2015

Out our way, we listen to the U.S. meteorological agency, but put our trust in The Farmer's Almanac. Last year, the "experts" in Washington said it would be a harsh winter but the Almanac said it would be mild. As most of the local ranchers and farmers expected, the Almanac nailed it. This winter, I am told, the winter will be tougher, and old Goliath is very pleased to see the number of round bales being set aside. Even if the winter isn't as bad as some are predicting, its...
