    Patrick Johnston|Updated Nov 25, 2022

One of the biggest annual holiday events of the year, the Havre Community Thanksgiving dinner appears to have been a massive success in 2022, drawing enough people to fill the St. Jude Parish Center, and plenty of volunteers to serve them. The dinner has been going on in Havre for decades, funded by anonymous donors, serving people a Thanksgiving meal for free, including all the traditional staples, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn pumpkin pie and more. Unfortunately,...

  • Letter to the Editor - Take a lesson in sportsmanship from the Bobcats

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Editor, Take a lesson from Tommy Mellott. I was very proud that at end of the Cat-Griz game that he asked for respect for the Griz bus/players when they departed Bozeman. Last year when they departed Missoula his team was shown very good sportsmanship. He made it known on national TV that he did not t want the Griz players given a bad time. Tommy mentioned that all the players on both teams put their hearts into the game and play their hardest to win all games. With Tommy’s mature attitude why then are both Montana teams f...

  • View from the North 40: Just keep freaking until the pheromones kick in

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 25, 2022

I didn’t even know that cat pheromone diffusers existed. Really, who thinks of making an electricity driven device that dispenses feline happy-pheromones, so how was I supposed to know that I should have one for my cat, Tony-O. I mean, it sounds like something Hollywood made up to solve a problem in a movie or TV series. Like, they really like the stressed-cat backstory, but in the scene before the pivotal scene for the main character they need the cat bit to fade from focus s...

  • Looking out my backdoor: Give thanks in all things

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Nov 25, 2022

I remember the Thanksgiving when Ben first brought his girlfriend, Shea, to dinner. We had the traditional meal, turkey nicely browned, all the side dishes. I asked everyone to share some one thing they felt especially thankful for that day. Years later my daughter-in-law, Shea, told me how my request had terrified her. None of her family talked about gratitude. Poor Shea. On top of being scared to share something personal, she had been scared to meet me. My children! Both of...

  • Out Our Way: I'm right here ... - John 14:1-3

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Out our way, you learn that often our greatest dangers come from within. Panic and terror can do far more harm that the actual threat. It was out on the Empire Ranch in what we called "Wyobraska" where I started riding, and because of my size, I was given a large Morgan mare named Autumn. Autumn was not only big, but fast and had incredible endurance. Her owner, Cecil, entered her in a 50 mile cross-country run, and as he weighed well over 300 pounds, Autumn had a big job...

  • Pastor's Corner: Failure to give thanks

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Webster's Dictionary defines the word "thankful" as feeling or expressing thanks; grateful. The dictionary defines "thankless" as not feeling or expressing thanks, ungrateful or not producing, not likely to produce thanks; unappreciated. In the Bible story of the 10 lepers only one came back to thank Jesus. How often do you give thanks for all that you have? Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time of giving thanks, but what about the rest of the year? On the way to Jerusalem...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

You know, Lord, when someone says, "Remember when ..." that phrase stirs up all kinds of feelings of warmth and happiness; all five senses seem to partake in the memories. There's just something about recollecting the past that feels good. We each have a particular yearning to bring back moments in time, moments when life seemed simpler, like remembering that our Dad whistled or hummed while he worked. Reminiscing about Mom, we can almost smell the yeasty scent of homemade...

  • From the Fringe: Wish more fans would show up, but small playoff crowds have always been electric in Missoula

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

I like big crowds at playoff games in Missoula. Some of the most exciting live sporting events I've ever been apart of have come inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium, dating all the way back to when the FCS was still Division 1-AA. The big crowds part, I'm going to be disappointed come Saturday night when the Grizzlies host Southeast Missouri State in the first round of the FCS playoffs. Thanksgiving weekend alone assures attendance will below and, but then you add a fan base who...
