This year's Chinook Community Thanksgiving Dinner is set for Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Blaine County Fairgrounds Commercial Building, a long running event that organizers are trying to bring back to its roots. Like so many things, Billmayer said, COVID-19 made this long-running c...
Havre Daily News staff Photos by Christy Bambrough Snow hit the region again Wednesday night and Thursday morning, dropping a layer of wet, white stuff in the area. While National Weather Service predicts the temps to warm up some Saturday and Sunday, a cold front is expected to hit Sunday evening bringing more cooler weather and, possibly, snow. My friend Jim from Glasgow sent me a short video clip of the Little Rockies, Three Buttes, Snake Butte and the Bear Paws. Immediately, I yearned, homesick. I shared the video with friends. “This is my beautiful country.” Their response, not unexpected, “Ah, yes. Uh huh. Beautiful,” as they looked for an exit. Which brought on this following chain of thought. To some this will sound as though I am describing two foreign countries, and I am. Both countries have disappe...
Taxes were the topic of our Local Government Interim Committee. Recent home reappraisals have shown significant increases. In some areas of the state, home sale prices have more than doubled. With folks moving in from out-of-state to places like Bozeman, the Flathead, and other areas, and bidding wars leading to properties at twice the asking price, the committee clearly has a number of challenges to address. First off, locals cannot compete with the prices that Montana homes are reaching. The next issue is that our tax...

Matthew 7:14 - "For straight is the gate and narrow is the way which leads to life." Out our way, when pushing the herd to new pasture, you aim for the gate that leads to it. There are many cattle trails that cross, but only one will take you to the gate. That's why Charlie rides point to show the way and I ride drag and sometimes swing to keep the herd moving and on the right trail. Now, as the new guy and tenderfoot herder, I didn't know the way on my own, so I relied on Cha...
When my husband and I moved to Havre in 2020, we often asked people what we should know about living in Montana. People told us a wide range of information, but they often joked, "Are you gonna be Cat or Griz?" That's when we first learned about this historic Montana rivalry. Suddenly, the bumper stickers and specialty license plates I saw around town made a lot more sense! The upcoming Cat-Griz game has me thinking about rivalries. The world encourages us to pick sides,...

Deb adds, "We live on top of a hill, we get to watch...
