  • Chris Peterson Column: Goodbye fall, hello winter

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 16, 2018

I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s crazy to me that it’s November. Actually, it's more than halfway through the month and soon enough it will be 2019. Yes, as crazy as it sounds, another year is almost in the books and in terms of local sports, fall is over and winter is well on the way. The Lights and Skylights have both been playing basketball games. Northern wrestling is also on the mats already and high school sports won’t be far behind. So, during the slight...

  • Celebrating History: An after-election slugfest

    Updated Nov 16, 2018

By Emily Mayer The election was over, but the slugfest continued. Much to the disappointment of the Havre Plaindealer, Republican candidates backed by the Non-Partisan League won both sheriff, that being Matthew McLain, and county attorney, that being C. R. Stranahan. W. B. Rhoades squeaked out his bid for District 18 judge, winning by 151 votes. But some serious damage had been done. Regular readers of this column will recall a couple of weeks ago, there was a legal publication in the Nov. 2, 1918, Plaindealer accusing the R...

  • View from the North 40: Not waving, but drowning, yet laughing

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 16, 2018

Sometimes I believe all the people who love me beyond my faults, and those people who just don’t know me well enough, when they say, “Oh, it’s too bad you didn’t have kids. You would’ve been a great parent.” Nope. My animals, aka the four-legged family, often remind me of my weaknesses, which make pet ownership complicated. In the higher-stakes game of parenthood, though, these failings most likely would have proven fatal. Not so much for the kids, but me. I am, by my very...

  • Cat-Griz Extra: Tilleman Ties

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 16, 2018

The last name Tilleman certainly has strong ties to Havre, to the University of Montana and to football in the Treasure State. After all, Havre's Mike Tilleman is in the Montana Grizzly Hall of Fame. So when Cat-Griz week rolls around, Havre, and Tilleman's hometown of Chinook, will also be deeply tied to the rivalry. On Saturday though, in front of a sell-out crowd at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, another Tilleman will have a big impact on the rivalry - UM senior...

  • Bound to Brawl

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 16, 2018

Whether it's Big Sky championships, FCS playoff berths, the Divide Trophy, or simply state pride and bragging rights, when Montana and Montana State meet on the football field on the third Saturday of each November, emotions are always going to run high. It's that way for the players, the coaches and the fans. Put another way, the Cat-Griz game is just like all the other great college football rivalries - no matter what's at stake, it's a really big game. And yet, just when it...

The first matchup comes tonight, as the Skylights will do battle with Arizona Chri...

  • Young and Faithful

    Updated Nov 16, 2018

Bass reverberates through the auditorium floor as a hipster worship leader wearing skinny jeans and a polo shirt pauses to invite the congregation, submersed in the light of two giant screens, to tweet using #JesusLives. The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafts in from the lobby, where you can order lattes and purchase merch boasting a sleek church logo. The chairs are comfortable and the music sounds like something from the top of the charts. At the end of the service, someone will win an iPad. The explanations I have heard...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Nov 16, 2018

You know, Lord, a recent devotional suggested that we be bold to intercede, asking on somebody’s behalf, for answer to their special needs and prayers, based not on our worthiness, but only on You, Lord. Residents in the “Pear Tree” subdivision were accustomed to the sight of their neighbor, “Mr. Bartholomew,“ taking his daily walk. They didn’t know that he was not walking for his health, he walked for others. As he walked by each house, he prayed for the family who lived within. The nurses in a metropolitan hospital kn...

  • Out Our Way: Tov Shabbat

    Updated Nov 16, 2018

Out our way, one learns to take the time to do it right — and sometimes that means slowing down and tsking a rest. Charlie and I, if we were riding in rough country on a hot day, knew that now and then we needed to give Doc and Jet a rest if we expected them to make it through the rest of the day. We didn’t mind having some time off as well, although the horses really did all the work. For Charlie and me, pushing cows was not a daily thing — maybe only once or twice a month except when things got really busy. Same was true...
