  • A joyful, tearful meeting

    Paul Dragu|Updated Nov 14, 2016

A Havre man met two siblings for the first time Friday afternoon just in time for his, the eldest's, birthday. The three embraced and cried before entering older brother Mike Jennings' Havre home. Sandy Erby had flown in from Baltimore and Jim Reimer from Rancho Cucamango, California, to meet their half-brother. Jennings, 70, said he had plans to show them Havre - "which shouldn't take more than five minutes" - have dinner, and take them to the Bear Paw Mountains over the week...

  • Veterans Day salute given to those who served

    Alex Ross|Updated Nov 14, 2016

Area military veterans and their supporters gathered on the flag bedecked Town Square for a Veterans Day ceremony followed by a lunch Friday. Veterans, some in fading uniforms, others in windbreakers with American flag patches, stood in relative silence as downtown traffic roared around them. There was then a three-volley 21-shot salute, and then a lone veteran played taps on a bugle. Rev. John Chapman of Havre's First Baptist Church, himself a U.S. Navy, veteran, gave an...

  • What did voters really see?

    Updated Nov 14, 2016

So, the most frequent refrain since Election Day is that “no one saw this coming.” Not the pollsters, not the media, not the Democrats’ machine. We might also note that the Cleveland Indians didn’t see what was coming after the rain delay in Game Seven. But unlike the Indians, we saw plenty, and we saw it early on. More than a year before the election we saw how a reality-TV star could dominate a debate stage and, with total disregard for truth, slice and dice 16 other candidates. We saw the power of controlling the message...

The average adult takes 15 to 20 breaths a minute — more than 20,000 per day, according to the American Lung Association. Healthy lungs are important to deliver clean air to our bodies’ organs and tissues, which convert oxygen into fuel to support vital body functions. When a smoker lights up, it affects not only the health of the lungs, but also the body structures that depend on the lungs for oxygen. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death, claiming the lives of more than 440,000 adults in America eac...

  • Can Donald Trump govern this country?

    Updated Nov 14, 2016

He starts with several large advantages: the fervent support of white, working-class voters and the Republican control of Congress. In his victory speech, he struck generous themes of unity, vowing “to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all of Americans.” But Trump is going to learn very quickly that being president is far tougher than running for president. Even with his allies controlling Capitol Hill, he’s going to face enormous obstacles that will make his job extremely difficult from Day 1. Start...

  • Northern women roll in Washington

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 14, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Skylights were looking for stiff challenges on their first true road trip of the season. But, with the way the Skylights are playing to start the season, it was once again tough to find those challenges. Against a pair of Cascade Conference foes this past weekend in Kirkland, Washington, the No. 16 Skylights improved to 6-0 with two more blowout wins. Northern beat Evergreen State Friday by 36 points and Northwest University by 30 points...

  • MSU-Northern Notebook: Lights seniors make one last stand

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 14, 2016

At the end of Saturday’s senior day game against College of Idaho inside Blue Pony Stadium, the scoreboard showed the Lights on the short end of a 31-13 loss. For the Northern senior class, the last two seasons have been brutal in that regard, as those Lights tasted victory just once in their last 21 games. However, the past, and even Saturday’s game, made senior day, or the senior class itself any less special. The day started with 15 seniors being honored, including for...

  • UGF ends Skylight's run at the Frontier volleyball tourney

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 14, 2016

It goes without saying, it’s tough to beat a team three times. It’s even harder when that team is your biggest rival and you’re playing them on their home floor. And that’s exactly what the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team was up against last Friday in the opening round of the 2016 Frontier Conference volleyball tournament. Having beaten the UGF Argos twice during the regular season, the Skylights needed to do it again to keep their season alive, but, it wasn...

  • Howling in Havre: Yotes 31, Lights 13

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 14, 2016

Emotions were running high on a warm, sunny day inside Blue Pony Stadium. That's because the Montana State University-Northern Lights weren't just playing their final game of 2016, and their final home game, they were also playing 15 seniors, who have given their heart and soul to the Lights, for the very last time. Trouble was, the College of Idaho Yotes were in a mood to spoil the festivities. Leading wire-to-wire, the Yotes brought an end to the Frontier Conference'...

  • Lights pin Mounties

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 14, 2016

It will be a long time before the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will compete in front of its hometown fans again, so when the Lights got the chance last Friday night against Eastern Oregon University, they made sure to take advantage of it. Northern, which dualed Eastern Oregon, a program that is in the first year of its existence and is headed by former Lights’ assistant coach Dustyn Azure, rebounded from a loss to UGF last Wednesday. • Bighorns skate past Nationals

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 14, 2016

Following four straight games on the road, the Glacier Nationals of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League were at home this past weekend, taking on the Helena Bighorns. But unfortunately, the results weren't any better. The two teams, which met inside the Havre Ice Dome, took part in Frontier Division action, but it was Helena that out-skated the Nationals in a 6-2 win Friday night. The Bighorns improved to 6-9-1 on the season with the win, while the Nationals fell to...
