GREAT FALLS (AP) — A federal judge has vacated a hearing scheduled for next week in Great Falls to hear arguments in a lawsuit challenging Montana's ban on gay marriage. The four gay couples who sued to overturn the ban along with Attorney General Tim Fox, who is defending the ban, agreed that U.S. District Judge Brian Morris has enough information to decide the case without the formal hearing that had been scheduled next Thursday. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently struck down similar gay-marriage bans in I...
HELENA (AP) — Republican members of the Montana House have held a caucus meeting after-hours and away from the Capitol. The Great Falls Tribune reports (http://gftrib.com/11oigIQ) that about 50 Republican lawmakers met late Thursday in the basement of a Helena hotel to talk about the 2015 legislative session. Party caucus meetings must be open to the public after the courts found in the 1990s that party caucuses were public bodies and subject to Montana's right-to-know laws. The PSC, in a press release issued Thursday, said an informal investigation discovered violations of PSC rules by CenturyLink, which provides service to much of Montana, including Havre. Complaints concentrated on the number of service outages and the time it takes for repairs to be made. The PSC said it had initiated a contested case proceeding, which enables...
Emily Mayer Two big announcements of local interest were made in the November 14, 1914, issue of The Hill County Democrat. The first was the announcement that the Hill County Courthouse bond had passed: HAVRE TO HAVE A COURT HOUSE It was a good piece of news that was given out early this week that Havre will have a court house. When the county commissioners met to canvass the official returns they discovered that the Bond Issue for a court house carried by eleven votes. Lacking most signs of those qualities commonly referred to as feminine, I have been content to go through life as I started it, as a tomboy. Life would be a jean-clad and dirty finger-nailed slice of heaven if this were the end of the story. However, my constant companion, Irony, not being one to leave well-enough alone, did give me a few feminine traits, and chief among those is body image issues that plague primarily females. This problem is also called “imagined ugliness,” though I and everyone else with the problem would...
Laurel: Police are generally skeptical about speaking to the press about cases under investigation. Often, we think, this is counterproductive. Police keep quiet even if it would be in their best interests to let the public know what they are doing. This is not true of the Chippewa Cree Police Department which opened up its files about the Robbie Alexander case. Alexander has been missing more than a year, leading to all kinds of rumors on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation. Officers shared the information with the Havre Daily...

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team put on a dramatic show for their fans when they nearly came back to beat the University of Great Falls Argos on Thursday night at the Armory Gymnasium. Northern jumps right back on the mat tonight, and this time, the Lights will wrestle back-to-back duals. Northern will face NJCAA powerhouses...
It seems every time the Montana State University-Northern Lights and UGF Argos hook up on the wrestling mat, there’s high drama. And lately, it seems like the Lights find themselves mounting a late comeback charge in their own gym. But for the first time in six meetings, the Argos made sure there was no storybook ending for the Lights. Thursday night, inside a rowdy Armory Gymnasium, UGF snapped a five-match losing streak to Northern by holding off a dramatic Lights’ com...

The 2014 season has been one of most memorable in the history of Chinook football. The Sugarbeeters have won nine games, a Northern C Division championship and two playoff games. To get to the state title game and make their mark in the history books, the seventh-ranked Beeters (9-2) will need to knock off second-ranked...

Special to the Daily News Alysia Wood is one of the bright new faces to come out of the strong Seattle comedy scene. She will be performing at the MSU-Northern campus in the Student Union Ballroom Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. Wood jokes about so many “issues” that a therapist once handed her a business card during one of her shows. The Bob and Tom show called her material, “well-written … well-structured.” National Lampoon Comedy Radio called her, “Hysterical!” Budd Friedman, legendary founder of the Improv chain, hosted a comedy compet...
