  • Holiday Stroll/Tree Lighting moved to first Saturday of December

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Nov 11, 2022

The date for Havre’s Holiday Tree Lighting, now rebranded as the Holiday Stroll, has been moved from the Saturday after Black Friday to the first Saturday of December, a change Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Director Jessica Fagerbakke says is permanent. Fagerbakke said the change of date was made for two reasons. The first reason is a practical one, as it is harder to find the necessary volunteers for all the events on a holiday weekend, she said. The second reason, she said, is because Chinook has their Parade of Lights g...

  • Republicans do well in midterms in Montana

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Nov 11, 2022

While Republicans did not do as well as they hoped on the national stage in the midterms, Montana seems very likely to see a Republican supermajority in the state Legislature, a prospect Democrats were dreading. Montana’s election results have yet to be canvassed and thus remain unofficial, but if current tallies hold, seats picked up in the Senate will increase GOP control there and their commanding control of the House seems to have only gotten stronger as well. Democratic candidates around the state, including in Hill C...

  • Friday production of 'Murder on Orient Express' delayed to 8:30

    Tim Leeds|Updated Nov 11, 2022

Tonight’s Montana Actors’ Theatre production of Agathie Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” is being pushed back a half-hour to let one of the actors finish a Montana University-Northern Skylights basketball game first. The originally scheduled game was delayed because of safety concerns for the traveling team in the current inclement weather, creating a slight timing conflict with the start of the production tonight. Saturday’s production is still scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Rachel Van Blaricom is a recruited S...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks for your support

    Updated Nov 11, 2022

Thank you so much for all of your support and encouragement throughout this campaign. We all hold unique ideas and ways of thinking, but this campaign showed that, no matter what walk of life anyone comes from, we all can work together for the common good and achieve any goal we set out to do. Most importantly, this campaign was conducted respectfully. Maliciousness and hostility are not required to make positive change, and people saw and embraced that. For the first time in decades, maybe ever, many people stepped out of...

  • View from the North 40: Worse things have happened in the history of the world

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 11, 2022

After 33 years of threatening to leave our ancient, cheap trailer house, it finally took charge and kicked us out — which seems like an appropriately blunt-edged end to an often-contentious era and an appropriately chaotic beginning to the next. My husband, John, started the whole thing. I don’t mean that as an accusation, I’m just saying that after five years of plugging away at converting part of our big shop into a house and three years of him telling everyone that we’re...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Time and time again

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Nov 11, 2022

Sunday, here in Mexico, we pushed time back an hour. Whew. Hard work, pushing. Guess what? It’s the Last Time. I don’t mean the End of Times. Or the end of time, as relative a concept as time happens to be. The Mexican governing body voted to hang out in Standard Time, forever and ever, amen. I’m happy with that decision. I have no reason to complain. I don’t live by the clock. I don’t need to get up at zero-dark-thirty to go to work. Nevertheless, I’m happy to stay on one...

  • Out Our Way: Here there be angels - Matthew 9:13

    Updated Nov 11, 2022

Out our way, the old time "cowboy" of legend is mostly gone. Oh, we still wear the boots, spurs, and chaps; still ride horses and carry a lariat on our saddle, but these days we are more likely to be the owners, family, or ranch hands. The prairie is fenced in and we haul cattle to market in big rigs rather than the old fashioned trail drives. Yet Big Mike had Charlie and me as his "cowhands." Except for the round up and moving back and forth between the summer and winter past...

  • Pastor's Corner: The Bible's wisest ass

    Updated Nov 11, 2022

Did you know that there are only two talking animals in the Bible? You can probably guess the first ... that's right, the serpent that speaks in the Garden of Eden. The second talking animal is the trusty donkey of a non-Israelite prophet named Balaam, found in Numbers 22, and if you guessed that, then extra points to you for knowing your Bible! If you didn't, that's OK, too. The story of Balaam and his donkey doesn't appear in the lectionary, and I don't think it's a regular...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Nov 11, 2022

You know, Lord, some years ago, author Bill Crowder, shared some interesting things about helping ourselves, stating that when we put You first, Lord, we know that You look beyond the surface things of our lives to what really matters. Quoting him: "Recently, I saw a television ad for a restaurant chain that made a dramatic claim. At those restaurants, the ad said you would 'Help Yourself to Happiness,' Wouldn't it be nice if a helping of potatoes or meat or pasta or desert...

  • From the Fringe: Not there yet: Griz and Cats have plenty to play for Saturday

    Updated Nov 11, 2022

This is our penultimate week. This week is the one we wish we'd just get over with. Because, the time has almost come. Cat-Griz is almost here. And while the fans of both the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzlies might overlook their games this weekend, the teams themselves, well we know they can't. There's no doubt the Montana State Bobcats have been frothing at the mouth to get to the 121st Brawl of the Wild. Having won four in a row, the Cats were about to set their l...
