I am what could be called an indiscriminate eater because I enjoy eating, will try most anything and have favorite foods categories from cuisine and to gut bomb. I can be equally happy with a hot meal that’s taken hours to prepare or courses to serve and, on the flip side, pulling leftovers out of the fridge and eating them cold from the container just to kill my hunger pangs. I think of it as an asset to be so versatile, and in my youth my family called me a garbage gut. They were fond of calling us kids affectionate pet n...
It was election time in 1914. Elected officials were chosen, and some ballot issues were also voted on. Two are of particular interest. The first issue had statewide impact-the passage of women's suffrage in Montana. We were not the first state to grant most women the right to vote. That honor goes to Wyoming in 1890, but we certainly were among the Western states leading the charge. The measure passed 53 percent for and 47 percent against. However, it seems that Hill County...
Laurel All praise to 5,064 voters in Hill County who got to the polls and let their voices be heard Tuesday. Decisions made by the Montana Legislature probably have more impact on people’s day-to-day lives than congressional decisions. People have a right and a responsibility to express their opinions. Dart In all, 46.7 percent of the electorate did not show up at the polls and a whole lot more haven’t even registered to vote. That means a small minority of the people in Hill County will make decisions for everyone. Let...

The building was officially sold Oct. 22. Emily Mayer, local history buff and owner of the Hi-Line Heritage House, said that the building was constructed in 1915. Mayer also said that the temple was designed by architect, Frank Bossout. Bossout was responsible for a number of architecturally...

Editor: The Atchison family would like to thank Havre and surrounding communities for the support shown during our “Haunted Walkway” during All Hallows Eve. We started back in 2010 with just a little bit of dress-up while we passed out candy to the kids that came by. This year, in addition to our tunnel that led up to our “Butcher Shop” we also had a graveyard scene that we welcomed older children to walk around to get their candy. Barring injury or illness we intend to expand little by little through the years to provide...

The Montana State University-Northern Lights, in many ways, are a young football team. A team with a lot of potential for the future. But, that doesn’t mean the Lights don’t have veterans. In fact, Northern will honor 15 of those veterans Saturday before the Lights face the UM-Western Bulldogs at Blue Pony Stadium. It’s the home finale for the Lights, which means it’s senior day. And senior day is always an emotional time. But, given what the 14 Northern seniors have been th...
At the start of the 2014 season, few people viewed the Chinook Sugarbeeters as a contender for the Class C 8-man State football championship. But, after a tremendous regular season and a favorable path to the title game, the Beeters are a legitimate threat to play for the ultimate prize in two weeks. Following an opening round triumph over Victor, Chinook is just two wins away from the championship game and will get one step closer with a win over Broadus (6-3, 4-2) in the...

In sports, every game is an opportunity, a chance to prove something. And when the Glacier Nationals play host to the Helena Bighorns, they will be looking to prove they can compete with the best the Frontier Division of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League has to offer, while also trying to put an end to their seven-game winless streak. The Nationals (1-9-3) and the Bighorns (7-2) will meet for the third time this season tonight, and Glacier will look for its first...

A library is a wonderful source of anticipation, excitement and imagination. At the Havre-Hill County Library, I begin the search for my next adventure and seek out the new arrivals. I am drawn to the new release “The Girls of August” by Anne River Siddons. Siddons is known as one of America’s top female southern writers and she is an expert at using words that can evoke the smell of an ocean breeze, conjure the silken caress of a rose petal or mesmerize the reader with the sway of moss in a summer storm. I check out this...
