It has been a dream season for the Chinook Sugarbeeters, and thanks to an impressive performance in the opening round of the Class C 8-man football playoffs, the Beeters’ dream will live on for another week. Chinook was one of two Hi-Line teams that qualified for the postseason, but unlike North Star, which lost in the six-man playoffs, the Beeters took care of business, knocking off Victor 52-24 last Saturday in Chinook. In a season where seemingly everything has gone r...

Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation tribal council candidate Russell Standing Rock brought down the house at a Republican gathering last week when he said that in his Cree language, the word "obama" meant "buttocks". But Helen Parker, who has taught Cree at Rocky Boy for nearly three decades, says Standing Rock is off base. She said there is no B sound in the Cree language. There is a word "opama", she said. “But it means thigh, not buttocks,” she said. “I was surprised he would say that because he is a Cree speaker,” she said. ...
The Hill County Park Board held its monthly meeting Monday in Havre and there was a lengthy discussion concerning permit requirements. In May, Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials told the board that fishermen had been complaining they were being charged a fee to go fishing. Because members previously bought a fishing license, they expressed they should not be charged to fish on top of that. The officials said that, under state law, they cannot stock fish at locations where an access fee is charged. Board member Robbie Lucke...
Former Havre City Councilwoman Pam Hillery will return to her old office. Hillery was elected on a 4-3 party-line vote by council Monday night to succeed Bonnie Parenteau, who resigned as Ward 1 councilwoman because she is moving to Helena. The three councilmen who were elected as Republicans voted for Vernon Baker, one of the five people who applied for the vacant seat. In addressing council before the vote, Hillery said she would be able to “hit the ground running” because of her eight years experience on council. But she...
With the holidays approaching, the Havre Jaycees are once again trying to help as many people as possible. The annual Toys for Tots and Koats for Kids fundraisers kicked off Saturday and will continue until Dec. 8. Bentley s...
Tyrah Gopher, Box Elder Volleyball Last year, the Box Elder Bears didn’t even compete in the District 6C East tournament. Nor did they in 2012 either. But in their first 6C East tourney in three years, the Bears showed they are back in volleyball, and Tyrah Gopher led the way. In Box Elder’s win over Big Sandy last Thursday in Chester, Gopher tallied 13 kills, giving the Bears their first tourney win in seven years. In four matches in Chester, Gopher racked up 38 kills, as...
In wrestling or any sport for that matter, practicing and scrimmaging against your teammates gets old and eventually, you just need to face an opponent, regardless of who they are. That is what the Montana State University-Northern wrestling must of felt going into the Northwest Open. In their first live action of the season, the Lights put together a solid performance, placing a number of wrestlers in the top four in their weight classes at the Northwest Open in Powell,...
The District 6C East volleyball tournament wasn’t supposed to be easy. After all, the district is generally one of the deepest in all of Class C volleyball. But this past weekend in Chester, the Chinook Sugarbeeters sure made it look easy. Chinook came into the 2014 6C East tourney unbeaten, and, after beating the North Star Knights in Friday night’s championship match, the Beeters left the tourney the same way, still unbeaten. Chinook toppled the Knights in a hard-fought cha...
