They are anticipating a flurry of ballots in the mail today and Tuesday, perhaps reaching the 97 percent that came back in 2012. But fewe...

A referendum on women’s suffrage would be Nov. 3, 1914. Saturday, Suzette Dussault from the Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau was at the Great Northern Inn reciting a speech that was very similar to what Rankin would have said in her Havre talks the weekend before the historic vote. Rankin must have been convincing. Hill County narrowly approved the p...

Election night is always one of the most challenging and most fun for reporters. It is, at best, organized chaos. That's especially the case when you don't know the outcome in advance. And there are lots of races in Montana and on the Hi-Line where it is very hard to predict the outcomes. Our website, www.havredailynews.com will have the results posted throughout the evening as they trickle in from near and far. The Hill County Clerk and Recorder's Office will be tallying...

  • Our View: Bullock right on Ebola

    Updated Nov 3, 2014

The biggest heroes in the international battle against the dread disease Ebola are the brave souls who gave up the comfort of their homes and traveled to Africa to help people most directly affected. Doctors. nurses and other aid workers have courageously put themselves at risk to fight this killer. That’s why we were a bit dismayed that the governors of New York and New Jersey imposed such draconian measures upon those workers when they return to the United States. Those returning from countries afflicted with Ebola, h...

  • George Ferguson Column: In Zach McKinley, we're witnessing greatness

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 3, 2014

There weren’t a lot of bright spots for the Montana State University-Northern Lights in their 55-13 loss to the Carroll College Fighting Saints. But for No. 24 in maroon, it seems like every week is a bright spot and I, for one, hope Northern fans realize what they’re seeing each week. Simply put, what Northern fans get to see and cheer for each week is the best running back in the Frontier Conference, and one of the best in the NAIA. And Zach McKinley is only a sop...

  • Game Day Notebook: Two great backs were on display Saturday

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 3, 2014

When the Carroll College Fighting Saints scored on a Mac Roche touchdown with just :15 seconds left in the first half of Saturday’s Frontier Conference game, it seemed harmless enough. In fact, it seemed like the Lights were well within reach of the No. 2 team in the country, only down 28-13. But what happened in the 15 minutes of the third quarter was vintage Carroll College, and it left the Lights on the wrong end of yet another blowout loss at the hands of their bitter r...

  • Griz rock Hornets; Cats lose at Cal Poly

MISSOULA (AP) — The Montana Grizzlies' defense didn't take kindly to having 42 points dropped on them last week, and they responded in a big way Saturday afternoon. Garrett Safron punched in a TD from the one with 32 seconds left to give Sacramento State (4-5, 1-4) its only touchdown. Safron f...

Yet, it wasn’t meant to be and the Eagles again showed why they are one of the top teams in all of Class A volleyball. The Ponies struggled at the outset of the match and despite being more competitive as it wore on, were easily defeated by the Eagles on senior night Saturday in Lewistown by the scores of 25-12, 25-18 a...

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 3, 2014

The Montana State University-Northern Lights trotted on to the turf at Blue Pony Stadium hoping to shake off the bitter sting of a brutal loss last week at Eastern Oregon. But, one day after Halloween, the Carroll College Fighting Saints made sure the Lights’ nightmare continued. The No. 2 Saints, riding a six-game winning streak, marched into Havre and thumped the young Lights, 55-13 Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium. The loss dropped Northern to 1-7 in the Frontier Conference, w...

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 3, 2014

Few teams in the Frontier Conference needed to win their last home matches more than the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team did. The Skylights toppled Westminster College in five thrilling sets Friday night, then returned to sweep the UM-Western Bulldogs on senior n...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 3, 2014

For a brief moment, the Havre Blue Ponies appeared on their way to the quarterfinals of the Class A state football playoffs, with an upset win over the Miles City Cowboys just seconds away. Then, seemingly in an instant, the game was lost and the season over. The Ponies led Miles City for much of the fourth quarter but couldn’t finish in crunch time and let an eight-point advantage slip away in the final 31 seconds of regulation as the Cowboys upended Havre 48-47 in an o...
