  • Looking out my Backdoor: Wreck on the Communications Railroad

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Oct 31, 2024

In each life it seems there might be one or two individuals with whom, no matter how hard we try, we simply cannot communicate. We usually marry them. Seriously, if nothing else, we surround ourselves with people of like mind. We act together in ways beneficial to both parties. We are on the same track, click-clacking to the same destination. However, now and then we encounter a person with whom out tongue jumps the track, derails, stops at the wrong station, or otherwise...

  • Vote!

It has been the honor of a lifetime to represent Havre and Hill County in the Montana Legislature. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assure our special part of rural Montana has a seat at the table in Helena. My commitment to the residents of House District 27 has never been stronger. But there’s also a lot more work to do. I want to take my experience with me to the upcoming session to assure the priorities of Havre, Hill County and the Hi-Line get the attention they deserve. Over the past several months, our c...

  • The Postscript: Little luxuries

    Carrie Classon|Updated Oct 31, 2024

I am quick to criticize other people’s luxuries. “Buying a latte every day?” I say. “What a waste!” But, of course, I have Peter making me coffee, and I can have it exactly the way I like it. (Lots of milk, not too much coffee.) I think sailboats and horses are crazy expensive, but campers and RVs make sense — because that’s what I grew up with. “Economics don’t count when you are talking about campers!” my father has repeatedly told me. My father is a frugal man. He live...

  • Out Our Way: Dust Eaters!

    Updated Oct 31, 2024

Romans 13:12'The night is far spent and the Day is at hand' Out our way, in addition to being a local pastor, I got to live a lifelong fantasy as a cowhand from time to time, riding with my Pard, Charlie, as we moved Big Mike's herd on Tiger Ridge up in the Bear Paw range. Like many kids, I wanted to be a real cowboy when I grew up - and while I never got that wish, I came close when I mounted up ole Doc and rode with Charlie to push cows. Now as anyone who rode with us or...

    Updated Oct 31, 2024

[Psalm 146] The nation goes to the polls on Tuesday. Here are some helpful ideas that come from a surprising source: an ancient composer of songs. After a long and brutal race for the White House, we need a few laughs. Presidential campaigns have become a slugfest, and most of us are not feeling particularly lighthearted as we prepare to enter the voting booth. But regardless of what happens on Election Day, the earth will keep turning, the seasons will change, babies will be...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Oct 31, 2024

You know, Lord, in a few days a 'time-change' is coming up - like when we get up and when we go to bed. Not everyone likes to deal with 'Time Change'! Oh - it probably only affects people; it probably doesn't 'bother birds, beasts, beavers or bears' - 'nor the chickens', one gal added. But remembering WAY back when we were kids at home and had to 'help' do the chores; milking the cows, for a while, we got a bit less milk in the milk bucket but the cows soon 'adapted' to the...
