Andy Carlson, superintendent of Havre Public Schools and the parent of Havre...

  • Moon Lake? Mohn Lake? Geographer probes mystery of lake name

    Updated Oct 31, 2016

KALISPELL (AP) — A Montana lake that residents want to name may already have a title. John and Sharon Ramsey’s quest to label the lake so that it could be stocked with fish led two people to come forward with options that they each say are the original. About six decades of maps from the U.S. Geological Survey carry no name for the lake, which partially sits on the couple’s property. Montana State Library geographer Gerry Daumiller started looking into the issue after the two proposed Lone Coyote Lake as the moniker to mirror...

  • City manager-commission proposal needs to wait

    Bob Sivertsen|Updated Oct 31, 2016

\friends and neighbors, The Havre commission-city manager proposal is on the ballot Nov. 8. While its appropriate to consider ways of improving how Havre functions, the timing of the proposal puts the cart before the horse, so to speak. Our primary objective at this juncture should be looking at ways to enhance the economic viability of Havre and the Hi-line’s lagging economy. We need to be working with our Local Officials in adopting an economic plan with the first objective being the constructing of an adequate highway ...

  • A Montana family for our outdoor heritage

    Caitlin Thompson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

Editor, I’m a lifelong Montanan, an angler, a wife and a mom, but one thing I’m certainly not is political. However, when I heard that gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte tried to stop families like ours from accessing public lands near his home by putting up gates and intimidating signs, I couldn’t sit on the sidelines. That’s why my husband and I decided to partner with the Montana Conservation Voters Action Fund to film their television ad. I was hesitant to jump into the political fray, but having Greg Gianfor...

  • Why I'm voting for Greg Gianforte

    Duane Ray|Updated Oct 31, 2016

Editor, Greg Gainforte is a job creator, a true leader with a proven track record who genuinely cares about Montana. I met Greg when I joined RightNow Technologies upon graduating from Montana State University in Bozeman in 2000. At that time, in-state jobs for technology majors were rare. Of the nine Montana engineering friends I attended classes with, I was the only one fortunate to find a job in Montana. Staying in Montana at Greg’s start-up company was a gamble. The company was relatively new, and previous attempts to s...

  • Bachmeier best choice for HD 28

    Greg Jergeson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

Editor, During all my years serving Havre in the Montana Senate and observing my colleagues in the Legislature, I learned a great deal about the qualities that make an effective legislator on behalf of his or her local district. As I have gotten to know Jacob Bachmeier, candidate for House District 28, I have been impressed with his complete commitment to what is best for the people of Havre, his constituents. I’ve found his approach to issues is informed by your input, feedback and advice. I believe that Jacob will not f...

  • Hess has experience to represent Havre best

    Sarah Mckinney|Updated Oct 31, 2016

Editor, Experience matters. Rep. Stephanie Hess brings the kind of experience and character to public office that I am looking for in a candidate. As a small business owner in Havre it resonated with me that Stephanie was endorsed by the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the Montana Realtors and has an A rating with the Montana Chamber of Commerce. All of these entities were grading Rep. Hess on her voting record from last session. Without our small businesses our small towns in Montana would not exist. Stephanie...

Both the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks and North Star Knights made the playoffs in their respective classifications, yet neither team stayed long as both were promptly eliminated. Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

The Glacier Nationals were faced with the tough task of taking on the Yellowstone Quake this past weekend and unfortunately for the Nationals, the result of their road trip was a two-game sweep. Glacier played Yellowstone last Friday and Saturday night in Cody, Wyoming. The Nationals lost the first matchup between the two teams 9-0. Then, they dropped the second game by the score of 7-1. The Nationals have just four points this season and remain in last place in the Frontier...

  • Carroll exacts revenge on Northern

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

The Carroll College Fighting Saints showed a month can make all the difference. After losing to the Montana State University-Northern Lights last month at Blue Pony Stadium, the resurgent Saints exacted some revenge Saturday inside Nelson Stadium in Helena as Carroll beat up on the Lights, 49-14. The loss dropped Northern to 1-7 in the Frontier Conference, while Carroll is now 4-4, having rebounded to win three of its last four games. And a big difference for Carroll’s t...

  • Eagles stop spirited Blue Ponies

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

It’s been a tough season for the Havre High volleyball team. But with Lewistown on the schedule for senior night, and a third-place in the Central A on the line, the Blue Ponies played one of their most spirited matches of the year. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough to get Havre into the win column against arch-rival Lewistown Friday night at the HHS gymnasium. The Eagles, who finished 7-1 and tied for first in the Central A, defeated HHS in four games, 25-20, 25-16, 21-...

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

There’s always measuring sticks throughout the course of a season. And Friday night was a big one for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team — a squad fresh off a huge road win at UGF just one night earlier. And while the Skylights couldn’t quite pull off a five-set win over the nationally ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints, they certainly proved they’re going to be a team to be reckoned with for the remainder of this season. In a thriller, Northern fell to...

  • Skylights stop Horns, again

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

It might be an exhibition game, but Tuesday night, the Montana State University-Northern Skylights are heading into the bear’s den when they take on the University of Montana Lady Griz in Missoula. And that’s why it was so important for the Skylights to take care of business against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. And Northern did just that Saturday afternoon inside the Armory Gymnasium. In their second meeting with Lethbridge in a week’s time, the Skylights smoth...

  • One Down: Lights beat North Idaho

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 31, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Lights always open the wrestling season with a dual against the North Idaho College Cardinals. And that dual is usually one that can swing either way. In other words, it’s always a battle. The 2016-17 season opener between the Lights and Cardinals, Saturday night inside the Armory Gymnasium, was no different. But, in the end, the Lights showed their depth and toughness, as, even without key grapplers in the lineup to start the season, N...
