    Paul Dragu|Updated Oct 26, 2016

The Havre Public School Board of Trustees approved Monday the hiring of nine additional school personnel. “For the first time this year, we’re finally fully staffed with paraprofessionals,” Superintendent Andy Carlson said after yesterday’s school board meeting. A paraprofessional educator, or a para, is a teaching-related position within a school. The para is usually responsible for specialized or concentrated assistance for students in elementary and secondary schools. Tammy Lafond, Lincoln-McKinley Primary School para, a...

  • Congolese refugees share their joys, foibles and discoveriesCongolese refugees share their joys, foibles and discoveries

    KIM BRIGGEMAN|Updated Oct 26, 2016

KIM BRIGGEMAN Missoulian MISSOULA (AP) — Gilbert Hategeka laughed as he told the story of himself. The heating unit in his new home in Missoula was quiet when Hategeka, his wife and their four young sons moved in after spending most of the previous 18 years in a refugee camp in Uganda. “I saw the heater but it wasn’t on, wasn’t working,” Hategeka said through a Swahili-speaking interpreter. “After about five days it just turned on and started vibrating. It vibrated the whole house.” Hategeka did what he and his wife, Chantal...

  • Dreams do come true

    Paul Dragu|Updated Oct 26, 2016

When I was the tender age of 28, I learned what I was supposed to be if I ever grew up. It was really a thing of beauty, the way it happened and all. I was staring at my laptop, in the middle of the day, unemployed and recovering from a failed relationship, when an ad to a writing program miraculously appeared on the screen. Then — suddenly! — an arch of bright light swopped over the screen and an invisible choir of angels sang a harmonious and epiphanous Ahh! I had seen the light. I was supposed to write. I spent the nex...

  • I-182 lets Montanans vote on life-or-death issue

    John Vincent|Updated Oct 26, 2016

This election, Montana voters will be deciding the future of medical marijuana in Montana. This is quite literally a life and death issue, and I hope that my fellow Montanans will vote with compassion by casting their ballots with a yes on Initiative 182. This issue is personal for me. My wife, Peggy, has suffered from multiple sclerosis for 37 years. None of the medications prescribed to treat her excruciatingly painful leg spasms have worked. Tears come to her eyes when the spasms strike. Painful, sleepless nights occur sev...

  • Opponents misconstrue, use untruths, about I-177

    Susan Waldron|Updated Oct 25, 2016

Editor, Letters to the editor by opponents/trappers are replete with untruths and attempts to misconstrue what I-177 is about. It is not about stopping people from killing skunks or “nuisance” animals. It is not about hunting/culling wolves, which is still governed by the target numbers set by FWP. It is not about stopping regulatory agencies from monitoring populations by hunts, or trapping, on public land. It is about ending commercial, recreational trapping for money or entertainment on land that belongs to all of us. Whi...

  • Zinke, Gianforte - All about The Donald

    Wade Sikorski|Updated Oct 25, 2016

Editor, It really is all about The Donald. When he walked into the dressing room of the 1997 Miss Teen USA beauty pageant, where some of the contestants were naked, he said, “Don’t worry, ladies, I’ve seen it all before.” The possibility that the young women, some of them only 15, might not want to show him anything, apparently didn’t occur to him. As he explained to Howard Stern, “I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant and therefore I’m inspecting it.” His awesomeness, in other words, entitles him to see...

  • 'Why should we vote for G. Bruce Meyers?'

    Bruce Meyers|Updated Oct 25, 2016

Editor, I’ve heard your question, “Why should we vote for G. Bruce Meyers?” Here is my response. 1. My opponent did not bother to show at the forum last week in Havre to face me. Someone said that he did not want to answer the hard questions. I think that the real reason is because he is taking the Indian vote for granted. 2. I’ve talked with voters in Fort Belknap who said that my opponent has no platform (what he would do for the people). Again, taking the Indian vote for granted. 3. I am for transparent state governm...

    Updated Oct 25, 2016

Kadia Miller, Havre Cross Country Running at the state cross country meet is nerve-racking, but it didn't seem to bother Havre High freshman Kadia Miller. Miller, in her first state meet, last Saturday in Kalispell, ran a 19:59.5 to finish in 19th place overall. Miller has been Havre's top runner all season long, and her finish in her first state meet, sets her up for a very bright future in Class A cross country. Her run also helped the Blue Ponies to a 12th-place finish....

  • Frontier Notebook: Frontier's all-time rushing record not quite in jeopardy

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 25, 2016

Last Saturday, inside Blue Pony Stadium, Montana Tech’s Nolan Saraceni put on a show. The reigning Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Year rushed for 232 yards and five touchdowns against a very good Montana State University-Northern rush defense. Of course, Saraceni wasn’t alone in the game when it came to star running backs. Northern’s Zach McKinley piled up 115 yards on a Tech defense which was allowing just 88 yards rushing per game coming in. Yes, it’s safe to...

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 25, 2016

The really exciting part of the high school volleyball season is here. But before local teams could look ahead to district tournament play, they had to take care of some final regular season matches last week. Last Monday saw the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks win two more District 6C East matches when they swept the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds in two matches at home. CJI won the first match by scores of 25-5, 25-9 and 25-6, getting nine kills and two blocks from Kimberli...

  • Hi-Line Football Roundup

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 25, 2016

The 2016 high school football season seemed to go quicker than usual, and this last week, all but two local teams from the Hi-Line played their final football game of the season, as just two, North Star and Chester-Joplin-Inverness, advanced to the postseason. While the Hawks clinched their playoff spot a week earlier with a win over Power-Dutton-Brady, CJI still had a road game against Fort Benton last Wednesday and surprisingly, the game didn't go as planned. The Longhorns,...
