    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 17, 2024

The Montana State University-Northern football team has had its share of success against Eastern Oregon in recent years. And the Lights came close last Saturday. But it wasn't close enough. And though the Skylights took the weekend off from Frontier Conference play, that roll continued as Northern traveled to Billings for the Frontier-North Star Challenge. Last Friday saw the Skylights sweep Mayville State and Valley City State. The Skylights volleyball team won against Mayville State University first. The Skylights beat the Comets in three sets (31-29, 25-18, and 25-18). The Skylights were led...

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

From a big road win last weekend to perhaps the biggest win of the season thus far. Last Friday night, the Havre High football team pulled off a massive comeback win against No. 4 Laurel in a 27-20 victory at Blue Pony Stadium. Taking the early lead, and shutting out the high-powered Locomotives in the first half, Havre saw its 7-0 edge slip away in the third period as Laurel ripped off 20 unanswered points. And yet, head coach Jake Eldridge's team never quit. Down 20-7,...

  • TasteFood - The secret is in the sauce for this meatloaf

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

The sauce for this meatloaf does double duty as a glaze and a flavoring agent for the meat. It’s purposely savory and tangy, erring on the side of a less-sweet meatloaf while driving flavor and spice into the meat. A combination of beef and pork mirrors a classic Italian meatball, but feel free to switch the meat ratios to your preference. You can also replace the beef and pork with turkey — preferably dark meat if possible. Light turkey meat is less flavorful. The key to a l...

  • Opinion - Justice and integrity on the line in the race for clerk of the Supreme Court

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

You may not have had occasion to know what the Clerk of the Montana Supreme does, or how important the office and this election are. The present Clerk is Bowen Greenwood, a Republican and former political director. His opponent, Erin Farris-Olsen, is an experienced attorney with an impeccable reputation for hard work, honesty and integrity. Based on the facts that follow, permit me to recommend, to every Montana voter, that you cast your vote for Erin Farris-Olsen. The duties of the Clerk are administrative and ministerial....

  • Celebrating History - Buttrey starts Holstein club

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

By Emily Mayer Editor’s note: Holidays and other issues have pushed back Celebrating History for a week. Here is the column that was slated to run in last week’s Havre Weekly Chronicle. Frank Buttrey is well-known to this day for his progressive, forward-thinking ideas. His out-of-the-box thinking and implementation of those ideas made him and Mrs. Buttrey successful business people. Mr. Buttrey was starting yet another great idea, and this article about it was published in the October 2, 1924 issue of the Havre Daily Promote...

  • Opinion - Important to vote in Supreme Court election

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

The Montana Supreme Court and Montana Constitution might seem foreign to most Big Sky citizens. But it plays a huge role in our lives. The 1972 state Constitution gives Montanans strong rights to privacy, freedom, a quality education, and ensures we keep our environment clean and healthy so we can enjoy our clean air and water and hold polluters accountable. Meanwhile, the state Supreme Court — one chief justice and six associate justices — ensures we have a fair and impartial justice system to provide a check on our par...

  • Opinion - Tim Sheehy dismisses the priorities of young Montanans like me

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

As a former Republican State Legislator here in Montana, a young woman, and a proud fifth-generation Montanan, I find Tim Sheehy’s most recently uncovered comments incredibly dismissive and offensive to young voters across Montana. Sheehy has been on record stating that women under the age of 30 are “indoctrinated” and “single-issue voters” for caring about reproductive rights this election. The issue of reproductive freedom may not be necessary to him, but it is an essential issue to many young Montana women. Sheehy’s...

  • Opinon - Health professionals urge voting

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

At a time when climate change has barely been acknowledged in the Presidential debates and most political conversations leading up to this consequential election season, it can be hard to believe we have the collective will to address our shared predicament. When we’re not feeling hopeful, it can be hard to muster the resolve to keep fighting. Ecophilosopher Joanna Macy and her colleague Chris Johnstone have coined the term “active hope” as a way to address this challenge. They explain that “hope” is not a noun but a verb, s...

  • Looking Out My Backdoor - Old dog, new tricks

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Oct 17, 2024

Scritch, scratch, scrape, scratch, scritch. Chips flying. Breathing dust. I really should have eye protectors. I cannot believe I am doing this job. Just last week, just days ago, I told you I do anything to avoid using sandpaper. Here I am, sanding down metal rocking chairs, one pair so old that the only thing holding them together might be the paint. I proceed cautiously, dust up my nose, in my hair, in the fibers of my clothing. Oh, well. Must be done. It was not my idea. K...

Last Friday, Havre made the long trek to Sidney for a Northeast A match against the host Eagles. In the end, Sidney was no match for the Ponies, as Havre crushed Sidney in a 3-0 conference victory. • Love and Family

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

You know, Lord, had to 'eavesdrop' a bit when a small group gathered. One lad said, "Auntie, some lady gave my mom a silly calendar with weird things written by each day. Mom opened it, looked things over, then started to laugh and said, 'Laddy, would you believe on your birthday, in March, it shows that your day, the 23rd, it's 'Chip and Dip Day' and neighbor, Helen's day, the 1st, is Peanut Butter Lover's Day.' And look at this, the 3rd - which is Uncle John's birthday, it...

  • Out Our Way: You sell those things?

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

Matthew 7:1 'By their fruits you will know them. Out our way, there is a lot of excitement and activity on the Tiger Ridge when the big cattle trucks arrive to move the entire herd to market. I have shared this story before, but I think it is worth repeating. As many of you know, Charlie and I rode for Big Mike's brand, working his herd. Charlie on Jet and me on Doc, we spent a lot of time checking the fence and the herd. But on this day, we were moving the herd to a stock...

  • On Relgion - Sadly, churches divided by doctrine are going to split

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

After decades of progressive dissent, the leaders of the Christian Reformed Church in America finally took a firm stand against the Sexual Revolution. Not only did the 2022 CRC Synod, voting 123-53, condemn “adultery, premarital sex, extra-marital sex, polyamory, pornography and homosexual sex,” it added the small, but influential, denomination’s long-standing teachings on these moral issues to its declaration of faith. The report added: “The church must warn its members that those who refuse to repent of these sins — as we...

Walgreens will close about 1,200 locations over the next three years as the drugstore chain seeks to turnaround a struggling U.S. business that contributed to a $3 billion quarterly loss. Company shares soared Tuesday after Walgreens detailed the plan and also reported better-than-expected quarterly results. The company said Tuesday that about 500 stores will close in the current fiscal year and shou...

  • Trump's economic plans would worsen inflation, experts say

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

PAUL WISEMAN and CHRISTOPHER RUGABER AP Economics Writers WASHINGTON — With characteristic bravado, Donald Trump has vowed that if voters return him to the White House, “inflation will vanish completely.” It’s a message tailored for Americans who are still exasperated by the jump in consumer prices that began 3 1/2 years ago. Yet most mainstream economists say Trump’s policy proposals wouldn’t vanquish inflation. They’d make it worse. They warn that his plans to impose huge tariffs on imported goods, deport millions of m...

  • Republican lawsuits target rules for overseas voters, but those ballots are already sent

    Updated Oct 17, 2024

CHRISTINA A. CASSIDY and NICHOLAS RICCARDI The Associated Press ATLANTA — The latest method of voting to fall into the political crosshairs is the way overseas voters — including members of the military stationed abroad — cast their ballots. The process is governed by federal law and implemented by states. In recent weeks, Republicans have been challenging how states handle these voters, something former President Donald Trump didn’t do in 2020 when he and his allies challenged his loss in court. But things have changed...
