  • Election 2015 forum: Ward 1

    John Kelleher|Updated Oct 16, 2015

The Ward 1 candidates for Havre City Council agree they have no problem if people want to have a drink at Town Square while enjoying music at Sounds on the Square. They would favor allowing the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce to continue operating the program as it always has. "I think it was blown out of proportion," said Ed Matter, a former school board president and radio station manager. "If a man and his wife want to drink a wine cooler that's no big deal," he said. The...

  • View from the North 40: A picture-perfect dysfunctional family

    Pam Burke|Updated Oct 16, 2015

My mom and her three sisters are — let’s say “quirky” just in case one of them gets her hands on this column. All four of the women are different, though I won't elaborate on their characters because I value my life. But all four have one common characteristic: They have spent their entire lives, consciously and subconsciously, in search of themselves, wondering constantly “who am I?” No one taught them when they were little — and their minds were big — useful cliches like: “w...

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO GOLIATH "That evening, at sundown, the people brought to Jesus all who were sick or possessed by demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured those who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons; and he would not allow the demons to speak because they knew him." • Pastor's Corner: Dream and pray, trust and obey

    Updated Oct 16, 2015

“I have a dream … .” Most of us are familiar with that quote from the very powerful speech of Martin Luther King Jr., delivered on Aug.t 28, 1963. I have a few dreams of my own. I dream of seeing drug addicts in our community living in health and freedom; I dream that a friend of ours who has Parkinson’s will be healed; I dream that broken relationships will be restored. Those are just a few of my current dreams. Some of them seem pretty outrageous, perhaps even unattainable. But why not dream big, especially knowing how big...

  • Friday Night Lights: Back in Blue

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 16, 2015

There are a lot of great storylines when it comes to the Havre High football team. But possibly the best among them, has been the play of Nate Rismon. Rismon, a senior who plays both wide receiver and cornerback for the Blue Ponies, has come a long way from where he was a year ago at this time — when he was relegated to the sidelines. That's because in the opening game of the 2014 season, Rismon broke his leg. He played a half of football and caught one touchdown pass. Then, s...

  • Title Night: Ponies host rival Eagles

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 16, 2015

Last Friday, the Havre High football team defeated Belgrade for the first time in four years. Tonight, with a win over Lewistown, the Blue Ponies can do something else they haven't in four years - win a Central A Conference championship. Thanks to their win over Belgrade, the Ponies (5-2, 3-0) are in the driver's seat in the Central A and can wrap up their first conference title since 2011 with a win over Lewistown (3-3, 1-1) tonight at 7 inside Blue Pony Stadium. "When I...

  • HHS spikers play two home matches Saturday

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 16, 2015

The Havre High volleyball team is already a win away from doubling its win total from last season. And if they can get at least a split against Conrad and Choteau this Saturday, the Blue Ponies will have achieved it with three regular season matches remaining. Other than trying to add to their win total and get better in the process, the Ponies will have little at stake when they take on Choteau and Conrad in back-to-back non-conference tilts at the HHS gymnasium on Saturday....

  • Nationals, Wild meet at the Ice Dome

  • Powerful Bears sweep Skylights in Billings

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 16, 2015

The nationally ranked Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears had other ideas however. On Thursday night at the Fortin Center in Billings, the No. 6 Bears swept the Skylights by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-10. • Pony harriers reach the postseason

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 16, 2015

There was a time when the Havre High cross country teams won championships. But those days now seem long ago. Yet, head coach Josh Holt believes championships are on the horizon and both Blue Pony squads will get their first shot to bring home some hardware this Saturday in Browning at the Central A Divisional meet. “I think that we will get there,” Holt said. “It’s going to take us a couple of years because we are just starting to build our foundation and that will take ti...

  • Lights face rematch with Orediggers

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 16, 2015

The Montana State University-Northern Lights have five games left. That's five chances to not only get a much-needed win, but also five more opportunities to keep building the program in the right direction. The first of those chances will come Saturday when the Lights (0-5, 0-6) travel to Butte to take on 13th-ranked Montana Tech (4-1, 4-1), and that opportunity to get better, let alone win, comes with a price. The price is, the Orediggers are very good. And Northern knows...
