    Tim Leeds|Updated Sep 28, 2014

Testimony Thursday of a witness for the prosecution in the Shane Johnson murder trial conflicted with testimony of another prosecution witness after a nearly hour-long pretrial discussion of issues including that testimony. The defense contends that Shane Johnson tried to get away...

  • View from the North 40: When a fish tale is more than a little fishy

    Pam Burke|Updated Sep 26, 2014

Sometimes I feel crazy about my animals, really. Tuesday I spent 45 minutes riding my horse with my dog along for the adventure, then spent one-and-a-half hours cleaning mud and weed seeds off my dog. Why? Because, that was the responsible thing to do, and I think my dog looks cuter than a bug's ear with the fuzzy/wiry hair on his legs left longish. Chaps - that's what they call the fuzzy-leg look, and he rocks them like an A-list star - collect everything dirt and weed related, and they need to be cleaned frequently. His cha...

  • Tough matches await Ponies

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 26, 2014

If there is one team more than any other that the Havre High volleyball team loves to beat, it's the Lewistown Eagles. And for the first time this season, the Ponies will get a chance to take the court against their arch rivals. The road has been difficult for the Ponies so far as they have faced some difficult competition and are just 1-8 overall and 1-2 in the Central A. Yet, HHS can make up for those losses with a win tonight over Lewistown when they host the Eagles at the...

  • Lights brace for air raid on Homecoming

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 26, 2014

There's a lot of football left in the Frontier Conference season. But it's safe to say the Montana State University-Northern Lights' backs are against the wall. And Northern's next opponent is a team that always has the opposition backed into a corner. The Lights (0-3, 1-3) return home from a disappointing 50-30 loss last Saturday at UM-Western, and now have to face the NAIA's best offense as the No. 7 Southern Oregon Raiders come to Havre Saturday for MSU-N's homecoming...

  • Blue Ponies tangle with Rangers tonight

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 26, 2014

Nonconference play has not been kind to the Havre High football team this year. The Ponies lost three of four games. But the great thing about high school football is those nonconference games don't matter, not when it comes to making the playoffs anyway. For Havre, the games that count start tonight in Livingston. The Rangers represent the first of four conference opponents in five games for HHS. The outcome of those four games, against Livingston, Belgrade, Lewistown and...

  • Friday Night Lights: Now it's really real

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 26, 2014

The preseason in Class A high school football can be a long one. For teams in the Central A Conference, it's even longer. To play a nine-game schedule in the Central A, teams need to play five nonconference games, so it takes a while for the start of conference play to roll around. But just as the days start to get shorter, and the air on a Friday night gets a little cooler, conference play, in particular, Central A play, arrives. It arrives for the Havre Blue Ponies in the fo...

  • Out our way: Who's driving?

    John Bruington|Updated Sep 26, 2014

"Be not like the horse or mule without understanding who must be guided by bit and bridle lest it stray from you" - Psalm 32:9 Years ago when I was pastoring in rural Wyoming, there was an incident when the state troopers pulled over a local guy on horseback for drunk driving. Seems he had lost his license after a few too many DUIs and so rode his horse over to the local watering hole to bend the elbow. Then after becoming nearly incapacitated, he left at closing time,...
