  • View from the North 40: The birthplace of movie plots: Bus garage

    Pam Burke|Updated Sep 24, 2021

The truth isn’t always stranger than fiction, but the truth could strangely inspire fiction. A big article we ran in the paper this week illuminated the trouble our local school system is having finding bus drivers to help transport students to events. I know, it seems mildly interesting at best, but apparently, it is a big deal because this bus driver shortage is occurring all over the country. However, for as far as my Google searches can see Brooke Charter School in B...

    Kason Clark|Updated Sep 24, 2021

Through four games this season, the Havre High football team has a 2-2 record. While they have picked up wins against Sidney and Hardin at home, the Blue Ponies have dropped road games against good teams such as Lewistown and Billings Central. Tonight, the Ponies will face another strong opponent in Miles City but Havre will get to face them at home at Blue Pony Stadium in their homecoming game. "Blue Pony Stadium is the greatest spot in Class A football to play a game," HHS...

After a month away, it is finally time for the Montana State University-Northern football team to return to Tilleman Field this Saturday. • Havre High volleyball sweeps Browning

    Kason Clark|Updated Sep 24, 2021

With Havre High School holding its homecoming this week, HHS volleyball head coach Stephanie Huse had to make sure her team was not distracted. If their performance Thursday night against Browning at Blue Pony Gymnasium is any indication, the Blue Ponies were more than focused as they defeated Browning, 3-0, by winning their sets by scores of 25-4, 25-10 and 25-12. • George Ferguson: Big Sky play starts, now we'll see what Cats, Griz are made of

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 24, 2021

OK, it's already been pretty well established that the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats are pretty darn good. In fact, it looks like no 2020 had almost zero effect on either program through three weeks of the season. Now, however, comes Big Sky Conference play, and that's an entirely different matter. I know, the fourth-ranked Grizzlies already knocked off a Pac 12 opponent on the road and a Missouri Valley foe at home. How tough can the Big Sky be? I know, the...

  • Out Our Way: A soft word - Proverbs 15:1

    Updated Sep 24, 2021

Out our way, patience is a virtue and as necessary when working cows as a good horse, rope and saddle. Maybe more! I have shared with you my first stampede set off by an impatient rancher who had become frustrated by the indifference and stupidity of his herd of Angus. Driving his old pickup into the milling herd as we were getting them together to trail them to the corral and branding chutes, he started honking the horn and scattered the herd. It took us another two hours to...

  • Pastor's Corner: Who is part of the group and who is not?

    Updated Sep 24, 2021

In my Roman Catholic tradition, this weekend's readings for Sunday come from the book of Numbers 11:25-29, also from the letter of James 5:1-6 and from the Gospel of Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48. In the reading from Numbers, Moses speaks to God saying that he needs help to minister to the people. God tells Moses to develop a list of 70 elders upon whom he will place a portion of His spirit on. After the Spirit of God had been given, Joshua has a problem because two of the elders...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Sep 24, 2021

You know, Lord, cloud formations are breathtaking - mostly when we're on top of a hill, especially when we need rain. One minute it looks like rainclouds bounding over the horizon and a bit later, the sun comes bursting through again - in a teasing way. You do promise seed time and harvest, Lord. Depending on where one is standing, working or even visiting, let's take a moment to look around and notice Your handy work. In our area we see mountains on one side and plains and...
