M...

  • Letter to the Editor - Protect our rights in November

    Updated Sep 16, 2022

Editor, What do you picture when you think of Montana? Is it the huge swaths of hikeable nature? Our varied individual liberties? The nation’s best fishing and hunting? Or is it privacy from the chaos and prying of more populated states like California? Fifty years ago, Montanans decided that these things were important enough to our culture to be enshrined as rights within the state Constitution. The product was the creation of the greatest constitution in the nation; one chock-full of rights that average Montanans see the f...

  • Letter to the Editor - Protect the Montana Constitution in November

    Updated Sep 16, 2022

Editor, The Montana Constitution is in peril and its consequential protections towards citizens are at risk. My name is Liam Edwards and I am an intern at the Montana Public Interest Research Group. The current Montana Constitution has offered protections for us for over 50 years. It guarantees our right to privacy, right to a clean and healthful environment, and the right to oversee government proceedings. These rights are important because they guarantee public land and water access. Public access to land and water means a...

  • View from the North 40: That does not mean what you think it means

    Pam Burke|Updated Sep 16, 2022

My column headline is a paraphrase of a quote from the book and movie “Princess Bride” in which one character repeatedly comments “Inconceivable!” every time something outrageous occurs to thwart his plans, finally prompting another character to say, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” The reason for the paraphrase though, is because this time we’re talking about a candy rather than a word. Specifically, it’s a gummy bear-style cand...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Nobody talks about that!

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Sep 16, 2022

I had a restless night, had made a hasty decision hard to unmake, nothing important, but irritating, and my mind wanted to run it on a Mobius Loop. I said, Enough of this. I’ll think about something else. On my bedroom wall I’d hung a beautiful depiction of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It’s not art, more like a framed poster. In the full moonlight, it was easy to focus on her calming face. I began wondering what the not-historic parts of Mary’s life might have been like and this is...

  • Out Our Way: Check my rig - Luke 5:32

    Updated Sep 16, 2022

Out our way, Charlie and I spent a good deal of time riding empty prairie. We generally knew where the herd was located - even in the huge expanses of the Tiger Ridge it didn't take much to find the several hundred head milling about grazing. But "Big Mike," the owner, didn't send us out just to stay around watching the herd - he sent us out to look for strays. Cattle are not overly bright to begin with, and although most new calves have the sense to stick by mama and the...

  • Pastor's Corner: The autumn and the fall

    Updated Sep 16, 2022

The four seasons have been a constant since the earth's inception. Depending upon climate, terrain and many other variables, the specifics may vary drastically. Our whole culture gears up in the fall for beginnings. Business, family, church, school, all are ready in the autumn to begin new programs and projects. So the fall of the year is perhaps the best place to break into the circle of the seasons and begin considering specific things we can do to care for creation. But...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Sep 16, 2022

You know, Lord, one really never understands some things in life until they experience it themselves. Like that old saying, "One has to walk a mile in another's shoes" to know the feeling - to get it! Take for instance the job of being a caretaker [caregiver]; folks usually are more concerned for the one being cared for, rather than the care-taker; that is, until they've walked that path themselves. The situation ain't easy, be it a parent, spouse or child. One can love them...

The Lights are off to an 0-2 start and things do not get much easier with a game this Saturday at Tilleman Field against Montana Western, the 19th-ranked team in the nation. While the treading has been tough, Souers has liked how his team has pushed through it. "The morale has been strong and the team chemistry is holding up," Souers said....

  • From the Fringe: Griz and Cats are good, but before the games kick-off, it's getting to be too much of the same ol' same ol' for the fans

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 16, 2022

For those of us who are lucky enough to reside somewhere in the Treasure State, and are fans of college football, it's no secret that Montana Grizzly and Montana State Bobcat football is our big time. To us, game days at Washington-Grizzly Stadium or Bobcat Stadium are no different than in Tuscaloosa or Austin or Los Angeles. To us, college football in Missoula and Bozeman is the big time. And it's been growing exponentially. My observations come in the form of my 30-plus...
