The Hill County Commissioners voted Thursday to lift the burn ban in Hill County. Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson said, due to the amount of moisture the county has received, the ban isn't necessary at this time, so the burn ban has been lifted. Hill County residents are still required to request a burn permit from their local fire district for open burning. The commissioners implemented the burn ban just more than a month ago due to dry conditions....

After The Havre Daily News printed an article on the front page of Wednesday’s edition about ownership of the Havre High School parking lot, Havre Public Schools Superintendent Andy Carlson said the article seemed to say he agreed with the city government that the school district owns the parking lot. Carlson said he does not agree with that assessment. The story also reported that the school district is working with Bill Baltrusch Construction planning work on the parking lot when it is working with Havre Sand and G...

With small Montana communities, especially in the eastern part of the state, struggling to sustain themselves, we don’t need the state government to make their struggle harder. Unfortunately, that is exactly what the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks did in 2007 when it limited archery elk permits in hunting districts within the Missouri River Breaks. In February 2008, the FWP Commission voted to adopt this motion and set the archery draw quota to 65 percent of the “historical permits.” This action, by law, reduc...
Dear Editor, This railroad-related letter comes for two reasons. First, I want to thank you and your staff for commitment to reporting on Amtrak issues and for supporting efforts to re-staff Montana ticketing locations and for preservation of long-distance passenger service. Sadly, ticket agents haven’t been put back on their jobs yet. And, even though Richard Anderson, Amtrak’s CEO, said in a U.S. Senate committee session this summer he felt “there are historically important trains in the long-distance network we shoul...
I have turned into my father and I don’t like it. When I lived in Washington, I used to almost dread Dad’s phone calls because they too frequently meant that somebody we knew, in the family or in the neighborhood, had died. Every day I open the Havre Daily Homepage, ostensibly to see what is going on in my old neighborhood. But a not-so-teeny part of me can’t wait to scan down to the obituaries. I am always relieved when there are no names I recognize. Just this week, out o...
From Fish, Wildlife and Parks In 2019, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will continue chronic wasting disease surveillance in high-priority areas in parts of northern, western and southern Montana, primarily from hunter-harvested animals. Hunters who harvest a deer, elk or moose in these areas should stop at a local CWD-sampling check station to have the animal sampled. FWP staff will collect samples and submit them for testing. Special CWD hunts will be occurring during the...
From Fish, Wildlife and Parks Although most hunters respect the land, property and wildlife they are hunting, many others do not. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks would like to remind hunters and all outdoor enthusiasts to be good stewards of the land, and respect both private and public property. The FWP Region 6 Citizens Advisory Committee, recognizing that this is an ongoing issue, raised the need for more public outreach. Every hunting season, there are reports of vandalizing of Block Management Area — BMA — boxes, hun...
The Havre High cross country teams had a good showing at the Cut Bank Time Trials and once again have shown their skills at the Lewistown invitational Tuesday. Lewistown’s course is quite tough. A lot of hills and barely any flat land made it an endurance test for the many harriers that attended the competition. At the end of the day, the Blue Pony teams gave another good performance and head coach Josh Holt is impressed with what he saw. “All in all, we did good,” said Holt....
