  • View from the North 40: The great story is everything

    Pamela Burke|Updated Sep 9, 2022

“I’m jealous,” my husband wrote as a comment to an article link he sent me. “What a cool way to lose an arm.” How many times does a person get to say that in a lifetime? A lot for some of us, and for sure John’s persona story about losing an arm is epic. An 18-year-old gets into a motorcycle crash just as a paramedic instructor is driving by. What are the odds? The surgeon on call at the hometown hospital that day had honed his trauma surgery skill as a Navy hospital surgeon at the front lines of the Vietnam War. Does it get...

  • The Postscript: Sepia-toned teenagers

    Carrie Classon|Updated Sep 9, 2022

“I don’t remember you at all!” the portly man informed my husband, Peter. Peter smiled, introduced himself, and reminded the gentleman where they might have met half a century ago. The man shook his head. “Nope!” This was the first high school class reunion I had ever attended, and it was filled with moments like that. I have never gone to my own class reunions. I’m not sure why. I was busy. I lived far away. I never knew more than a tiny fraction of the students in my class...

  • Looking out my backdoor: Down the Rabbit Hole with 'adicles'

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Sep 9, 2022

Such a simple thing, making the bed when one gets up in the morning. If one does. Make the bed, that is. If that is one’s habit. Who’d have thought, who could have imagined, there would be at least five different things one did wrong every morning of one’s life while making the bed. Cor blimey. (I read that in a book. It means something similar to “what the hay” or “dang me, orter take a rope and hang me” and other phrases of utter astonishment.) How do I know that I and po...

  • A request for help identifying an item at the Clack Museum

    Updated Sep 9, 2022

from Emily Mayer As a lover of history, it's only natural to have a love for antiques. I've seen a lot of antiques over the years, and among my favorites are ones of a piece of machinery, a kitchen utensil, a piece of dinnerware whose use I had never heard about before. These are great learning tools; talismans of the past that tell us about how life was lived by our ancestors. However, sometimes pieces have me stumped, and who better to ask than the Havre and Hill County...

  • Out Our Way: The horse-eating calf - Job 13:15

    Updated Sep 9, 2022

Out our way, one of the first things a tenderfoot cowboy learns is the importance of circling. A horse can get skittish and less than cooperative at times - and often the best thing is to "circle" him. Ole Doc didn't care for the horse trailer and often refused to load. So after a few refusals, I would start trotting him in a circle pattern until he calmed down, and more often than not, he walked right into the trailer. Now Babe, his "girlfriend," was quite a different...

Per usual, we encouraged our pastors and deacons to volunteer: to write articles for the Havre Daily...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Sep 9, 2022

You know, Lord, sometimes our thinking gets mixed up, we think the quality of our life is based on what happens to us, but we're forgetting that the quality of our life is how we respond. We probably know someone - including ourselves - who've become bitter instead of becoming better, when tragedy befalls us. No matter what, we need to remember that You, Lord, have secured our victory. We're to take hold of that truth, internalizing Your gospel gift and live it out amid our...

  • Cross country hosts Havre Invite this weekend

    Kason Clark|Updated Sep 9, 2022

One of the downsides for the high school cross country season is that teams do not get to compete at home too often. So the Havre High cross country teams are lucky that they get to host a meet this Saturday with the Havre Invitational at Prairie Farms Golf Course. With a home meet, the Blue Ponies will be afforded several advantages. For one, they will get to sleep in their own beds before getting up for the meet. They will also get the support of more friends and family who...

  • Blue Ponies look to get back on track against Hardin

    Kason Clark|Updated Sep 9, 2022

After a tough loss in the home opener, the Havre High football team is back on the road tonight. The Blue Ponies will face Hardin tonight in a game they need to win in order to get their record above .500. While they will have a long bus ride ahead of them, HHS head coach Jake Eldridge expects the Ponies to play well tonight. "It's another long road trip for us but I expect us to go down there and compete really hard," Eldridge said. "Hopefully, we can correct some of the...

The Havre High volleyball team is back on the road this weekend with a trip to Laurel and Miles City on the docket. • From the Fringe: After one day, it's obvious, Cats, Griz built pretty similar

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 9, 2022

And last year I thought it was close. Close may not be able to even describe how similar the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats might turn out to be this season. But after playing two eerily similar teams from the Southland Conference, and taking into account the quarterbacks, the running game and the defenses, it looks like the Stats FCS Poll, which has Montana third and Montana State fourth again this week, might just be really accurate after all. I know, the...
