Editor's note: This version corrects that the Air Fare breakfast is free with free-will donations accepted. A tradition more than eight decades long continues next week, with the North Central Hangar of the Montana Pilot's Association hosting the Air Fair Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Havre City-County Airport. "One of our goals here is to bring awareness to the public that we actually do have an airport, and it's a fairly busy airport, when you look at a community this size,"...
In the past day, the Coal Ridge Fire in Blaine County, 5 miles North of Stafford Ferry, has remained at 1,200 acres despite a day of erratic winds as firefighters establish a perimeter around most of the blaze. A release from the Montana Bureau of Land Management Thursday said the fire has now been mapped at 1,200 acres, up from the previous estimate of 450 acres Tuesday. Wednesday, BLM said the fire had burned 790 acres of private land, 166 acres of BLM managed lands, including areas within the Upper Missouri River Breaks...
Beaver Creek Park staff and Montana Department of Transportation are again urging drivers to use caution when driving on Montana Secondary Highway 234 - Beaver Creek Highway - and other roads in Beaver Creek Park starting next week as cattle will again be on the park starting Tuesday. Every year, the Hill County Park Board leases grazing land to area ranchers from the day after Labor Day to the first of the next year, with the season sometimes shortened due to weather or...
Editor, Gov. Greg Gianforte is hiding massive property tax increases behind one-time rebates and, possibly illegally, blocking our state’s largest conservation funding bill. Montana property taxes increased by an average of 43% this year. That’s an average of $630 more per year. Meanwhile, Gov. Gianforte’s one-time tax rebate of $675 is certainly getting a lot of attention. This tax rebate was only possible due to federal pandemic relief and high income folks moving to Montana from out-of-state. And it was strat...
After years of depressed prices, we ranchers and cattle feeders are desperate for Congress to do something — do anything! It was in this context that the 50/14 concept was conceived. When the “negotiated spot market” for fat cattle got down to less than 20% of the total, it became a problem that obviously needed correction. Particularly since the prices derived in this very thin market are used by the packer cartel to buy the remaining 80% of cattle — the “captive supply.” Clearly, the cattle industry has a corrupt pri...
While waiting for my daughter to get okayed for an operation at the hospital in Billings, I dumped a puzzle onto my table. Jigsaw puzzles are a good distraction. I had loaned this particular puzzle depicting an antique car show in front of a typical diner to snowbird friends to work last winter. Intact. One thousand pieces in the box. It is a particularly challenging puzzle, fun, so I borrowed it back. When I finished the car puzzle, on the day of Dee Dee’s surgery, I had t...

Matthew 15:14 - Do not listen to them, for they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, will not both fall into the ditch? Out our way, as you may recall, we often have tourists driving through the area on their way to Glacier National Park. Granted, the Bear Paws are not as spectacular as the Rockies, nor do we have the multi-millionaires from California and Texas building their majestic mansions along the way. So it is not too surprising to hear some remark as...
Let me tell you a story about a very wealthy rancher who lived a long time ago. He and his wife had 10 children, a thriving ranch teeming with herds and flocks. In one day, this man and his wife lost all 10 of their children to a severe windstorm. On one day shortly after that, they had all of their livestock either stolen or killed. On another day shortly after that, this man - most probably very healthy normally - this man was struck with a severe case of boils. When all of...
Press release God’s purposes for His people do not change at the age of retirement. As followers of Christ, we are called to keep growing spiritually, to keep being conformed to the image of Christ, to keep building the church, to keep sharing the Gospel, to keep on being ambassadors for Christ, to keep using our giftedness, and to keep on making disciples in every one of our retirement years. To encourage this biblical mindset in retirement is the purpose of this study. It is particularly designed with retired and aging p...
You know Lord, it was interesting to read what Ms. Kathy K. was sharing about the word “yet.” She wrote: “Near the end of this month, I will turn sixty, and, though the number seems big, I know that, in the review mirror, it will shrink, as did 50, 40, 31, 21 and 16. At each milestone, I looked forward, imagining my future life. Now I can say without hesitation: almost nothing turned out as I expected. “I can also say that I have lost my faith that things would be the way I wanted. Instead, I have found faith in the redempt...
We count the days and then the weeks - though 'lone-ness' feels like years. A picture, dream, or special thought is sure to bring on tears. As parent, child, sibling, or spouse; will we survived this pain? They're gone ahead; they're just 'beyond'! We'll see them once again. Grief and onions - do they compare? Peel one, you'll cry a lot. This time of grief, will we survive? It's not what we've been taught. We're not to panic, hurry, hide; we'll 'peel' - not hold tears in. God...
Off to a 1-0 start for the first time in four seasons, the Montana State University-Northern Lights are riding high. And they should be. After all, the Lights gave second-year head coach Jerome Souers his first win at MSU-N last Saturday when they beat Mayville State 14-0. Now though, things will get much more difficult in week two. This Saturday, Northern will host Rocky Mountain College in a rare non-conference game between two Frontier Conference rivals. The game kicks off...
Coming off a dominant home victory over Hardin to open the season, the Havre High football team will have a road test tonight against the Billings Central Rams. As the Blue Ponies head into enemy territory, HHS head coach Jake Eldridge expects a battle. "It's going to be a great ballgame. Billings Central is consistently one of the top teams, not only in our conference but in the entire state," Eldridge said. "They're well coached both schematically and fundamentally and...
In their first action under first-year head coach Danielle Parsons, the Havre High cross country teams will begin the season today with the Hardin Invitational. Hardin offers a tough course to start the season, so Parsons hopes that her runners will use this weekend as a learning experience. "Our goal at this meet is to go and get a time and to learn," Parsons said. "This course will definitely expose to an athlete their weaknesses so after we come back from Hardin, we'll...
