Members of the Chamber board decided to put the garbage bins out, at the parking lot at Fifth Avenue and First Street and at Zip Trip in Highland Park, for a week, she said, to give people more opportunity to fit their cleanup into their schedules. She added that the bins would be out by Labor Day but maybe as early as today, and...

In the face of impending doom, my instinct is to collect up everyone precious to me, like a hen gathering chicks or me filling my plate with my 20 favorite treats in a dessert bar. Mine. Mine. Mine. You are all mine. Come here to me. At the first report of a fire in the Bear Paw Mountains Sunday, my chest went all achy with a heart palpitating need to have every last one of my family members by my side, now. Like, right now. Not just my husband and my four-leggers, not just fa...
The Havre Daily News extends thanks and praise to the response to the East Fork Fire in the Bear Paw Mountains. Residents in the original area of the fire jumped to action from the start, and since the fire burned out of its original area and mushroomed from Wednesday on, the response by officials and the community has been incredible. While the battle is far from over, the coordination of efforts on multiple fronts of the fire, of multiple agencies and volunteers, the outpouring of support from the community shows why...

Montana is a big state filled with many small towns, many of which have their own small schools. Big Sandy is one such town, though it wasn't always as small. Going back to the '70s, Big Sandy High School was a class B school - high school enrollment alone was at least 120. However, enrollment has more than halved since and the Big Sandy Pioneers attend a class C school. The entire district has 170 students, 91 in high school and middle school and 70 in kindergarten to sixth...

You know, Lord, occasionally, the moon will drift by the bedroom window and peek in. That happens when the moon is waxing and when there aren’t too many clouds in the way. What an awesome sight to behold. Of course, stepping outside to view the moon and the host of starts above is also a sight to behold. Viewing the cosmic wonder is something hard to describe, for we know that You, Lord, are right there! A breeze crosses our face. We can feel a palpable sense that You are yearning for all of us; You want us to know You, to l...
Our sadness craves some company; in sorrow, we pull out. What step is next? We do not know — we’re truly filled with doubt. In misery we tend to “hide” — for nothing stays the same. We miss our darling, that’s for sure; things here just call his name. We’re not alone; we know a few, they suffer much, that’s true. A listening ear does help a lot; they need a blessing, too. We’re saddest in dark of night when stars are masked by cloud. And then again when dawn does break and Morning Doves are loud. Our grieving friends...
One of the Bible concepts that some people have a hard time comprehending is the concept of forgiving. Because of events that have happened in our lives or the things that were modeled to us growing up, many of us were not taught to forgive. When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ and acknowledge that he shed his blood for our sins, we receive the free gift of salvation. This salvation is by faith in Christ and by grace as we see in Ephesians 2:8-9. Because of the grace of God, we also receive forgiveness from every sin...
Out our way, we know that horses are always looking, listening, smelling and learning. Last week, I was at the Minnesota State Fair and admired the horse barn. As I walked in most of the horses were facing the inside of their stalls and away from the crowds, but the ears were always on alert. I watched the ears as they listened to this or that as the crowds went around them. They may not have been watching, but they were very aware of all that was happening around them. I reca...
Playing high school football is always a fleeting experience and no matter how much athletes try to cherish and treasure their time on the gridiron, often times, it comes and goes, seemingly in the blink of an eye. Part of the reason for that is that when it comes to football, once it's over, it's over. There aren't any pickup games on intramural opportunities, if you aren't good enough to play collegiately, then four years in high school is all you get, unless of course, you...

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the Montana State University-Northern football team the last three weeks. The Lights held a spirited and competitive fall camp, full of enthusiasm, unity and hard work. Now however, it's time to take all the Lights have done and put into a real game. That game comes Saturday when the Lights (0-0) open the season, and Frontier Conference play with a road trip to Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff between the Lights and Battlin' Bears...
A couple years ago, Josh Holt took over as head coach of the Havre High cross country team with the idea that both Blue Pony teams could compete with the best Class A has to offer. At this point, there is still a ways to go to reach that goal, but so far, both teams seem headed in that direction. Neither Havre cross country team managed to finish in the top 10 at the Class A state meet a season ago but with all the varsity runners returning for the boys squad and a majority al...
When Havre and Lewistown get together on the football field, it's always an important game. But after each team lost their opener, the showdown tonight inside Blue Pony Stadium, has become even more critical. The Blue Ponies (0-1), who lost their season opener to Hardin, will host the Eagles (0-1), who fell to Laurel last week, tonight in a critical Eastern A conference showdown, as both teams look to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. "You have to win four...
