Editor, We live in a unincorporated farm community. On a dirt road. It’s harvest. We understand very much. Feeding people has been a passion of mine for a while. We get it. However, we are concerned with the speed you go down this road and the billowing cloud of dust you leave in your wake. Not only does it take your breath away, but it is also kind of rude. The safety of ourselves and our pets is also a concern. Please think about what it would do to someone, if Baby Kitty got spooked and ran that way, as your careening v...
Editor, As the new school year approaches, families of children with special needs should review their child’s IEP to ensure it still meets their child’s needs. Changes in the household as well as typical summer “growth spurts” may require modifications to their IEP. Likewise, new school schedules and staff may also require changes to accommodate the transition and provide them with extra support at the start. Talk to your child’s case manager, their teachers and the school’s administrator if needed. Your child’s suc...
Editor, With skyrocketing prescription drug prices, Montanans are left to choose between paying for their life-saving prescriptions or essentials like food or housing. It’s time for Congress to come together and crack down on Big Pharma’s abuse of the U.S. patent system at the expense of patients. I urge Sens. Tester and Daines to work with members from both parties to pass the bipartisan Affordable Prescriptions for Patients Act, introduced by Sens. Cornyn and Blumenthal. Big Pharma companies continue to exploit loo...
I’ve had several dogs along these many years but never had one get a hot spot. In July, about the time the storms, pitiful as they have been, began blowing and blustering, Lola started chewing at the base of her backbone, right above where her tail attaches. It worried me. Leo helped me corral her between my knees and we sprayed her with the purple stuff, you know, the stuff you use on cows and horses when they get a barbed wire cut or some such. I was wearing white pants that...
Anyone driving Montana’s highways knows the risk of colliding with deer and other wildlife. Hardly a mile goes by without the gruesome reminders of hit animals, broken bumpers, or smashed headlights scattered on the shoulder. According to the Bozeman-based Western Transportation Institute, collisions with wildlife can be reduced by up to 85 percent with the installation of wildlife crossing infrastructure such as fencing and under and overpasses. Such installations have been effective in several western states, including Neva...

Luke 16:19-31 Out our way, there are many cattle trails crossing the pastures, but only one large road leading from the upper to lower pasture and back again. One fall, as winter was starting to move in, Charlie and I saddled up to move the herd from the upper summer pasture down to the lower winter pasture. The lower pasture had not been touched since early spring, so the grass was lush and plentiful. The reservoir was full and deep with flowing water, and, best of all,...

You know Lord, camping friends shared about gazing up into a night sky lit with stars - way too many to count. E. K. mentioned seeing a mesmerizing sight, but what had their focus was a paper lantern moving above their heads. How still the night was, hardly any wind to blow the globe as it floated lazily toward the heavens. Along with their friends and the kids; "We all oohed and aahed as the glowing object moved over the tree tops and eventually beyond our vision." Despite...
