  • Republican maps for Indian Country: Broken promises

    Updated Sep 2, 2022

The Montana Districting and Apportionment Commission is responsible for redrawing state legislative districts to reflect every community in Montana. Voters need to be able to elect legislators who represent different viewpoints and can come together to solve the problems our state faces. This responsibility requires the commission to ensure voices are heard in every part of our state, and no one is left behind. That is why it was so unfortunate that when the commission proposed maps earlier this month, the Republican...

  • Fresno boat ramp closed next week for repairs

    Tim Leeds|Updated Aug 29, 2022

Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited is taking advantage of what would generally be considered a bad situation at Fresno Reservoir to make some repairs to its boat ramp. Chapter member Craig Buettner said Thursday that the ramp will be closed for seven to 10 days starting Monday when work to repair the ramp begins. He said Walleyes wanted to start work on the ramp before levels start rising again. Walleyes is paying for all of the work being done on the ramp. The dam was...

  • Native American legislators respond to Butcher comments

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Aug 26, 2022

At a meeting of North Central Pachyderms last week former Montana legislator Ed Butcher made disparaging comments about current and former Native American legislators, and some of them have since responded to his comments. The meeting Butcher attended was originally about tracking Republicans in the Montana Legislature and their loyalty to the party, but toward the end of the meeting he made remarks about Native American legislators he worked with. He said two of the legislators from Montana’s reservations he knew, i...

  • Open house on Beaver Lodge levy set for Sept. 4

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Aug 26, 2022

Beaver Creek Park’s Beaver Lodge will be holding an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, for people interested in learning about a three-mill levy that will be on this year’s general election ballot, one that will pay for the structure’s replacement. The Hill County Park Board was initially planning to pay for major renovations and upgrades at the current lodge, which has seen significant deterioration over the years, but after being denied a grant that would have paid for much of these upgrades and the revel...

  • Commission passes yearly vehicle tax after some argument

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Aug 26, 2022

At their weekly business meeting Thursday the Hill County Commissioners voted unanimously to distribute funds from a 0.5 percent local option motor vehicle they intend to impose, a tax the commission approves every year, but not after some argument. Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson said he would not vote for the resolution unless Hill County Treasurer Sandy Brown starts collecting credit card fees on all motor vehicle-related transactions again. He said people who pay with credit cards online are charged fees, but...

  • Letter to the Editor - Fresno's management must change

    Updated Aug 26, 2022

Editor, Fresno Reservoir, Aug. 23, 2022: The pelicans, herons, plovers, and gulls are mostly gone. The fish are starving, some are dying. The water levels are dropping faster than the clams can move. They die on the shore, far from the receding water’s edge. Fresno is almost 30 feet down and only 15 percent of capacity. Despite the Bureau of Reclamation’s statement to “manage, develop, and protect water in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American public,” they have sold almost all of...

  • View from the North 40: Creative reporting takes the sting off

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 26, 2022

I tried to read the news this week but, honestly, outside of work where we are treated like a prison work gang, without the snappy uniforms, and forced to read news, I was too tired and rundown (and more than a little, as the British say, couldn’t be arsed) to read much past the headlines. So without further ado, I give you all the news I could make up about my favorite weird headline of August: “Turkish scorpion farmer milks arachnids for their expensive venom,” by Umit...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: When retreat means moving forward

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Aug 26, 2022

Two weeks. What a gift. I have had two weeks with my son at my home. My guestroom with bath was finished before Ben’s plane landed. He said, “Mom, I don’t want to do a lot of visiting neighbors (of whom there are so few) or any tourist stuff. I just want to be with you and to have solitude to consider my life, to figure out what I want to do next. I want a retreat, away from everyday activities and responsibilities.” And so it went. We filled each day with stories, memorie...

  • On second thought: Eastern Montana voters can make House races fun again

    Will Rawn|Updated Aug 26, 2022

U.S. House races are boring. It's a Democratic district or it's a Republican district, that's all you need to know. That was definitely the look of Montana's new eastern congressional district at the beginning of the year where recent voting history heavily favored the Republican incumbent. That's until independent Gary Buchanan got into the race with backers from left, right and center. If approval across the political spectrum were the key to electoral success, the...

  • Out Our Way: I shall fear no evil - Psalm 23

    Updated Aug 26, 2022

Out our way, the open range is almost gone and the prairies are mostly fenced off, but it can still be a wild place at times. By and large, our homes on the range have very few buffalo roaming about these days, although the deer and the antelope still play and are a pretty common site. But the song never mentions other critters of the prairie who are still to be found. Over by the national parks, grizzly and roving wolf packs are still an issue for area ranchers, and, even out...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Aug 26, 2022

You know, Lord, encouragement is like oxygen - we can't live without it. It was lovely watching two little kids the other day. They were probably both about 3 years old. Little "Ricky" was trying hard to get the wrapper off of a stick of gun. His friend, "Emmy," was watching him, suggested he watch how she did it. He watched his little neighbor girl slowly unwarp her stick of gum. Then he tried again as she encouraged him, step by step, to unwrap it from the side, not from...

  • Pastor's Corner: Do you want to go to Heaven when you die?

    Updated Aug 26, 2022

Last weekend at our Saturday night and Sunday services, I had the responsibility of preaching on the readings for the 21st Sunday in Ordinary time. The readings were as follows: Isaiah 66:18-21, Hebrews 12:5-7,11-13 and the Gospel was Luke 13:22-30. In my homily I focused mostly on the Hebrews reading and the Gospel reading. I started my homily with a survey of those present. The survey was one question long and was the same question that is at the top of this page. The...

  • Havre volleyball ready for another strong season

    Kason Clark|Updated Aug 26, 2022

The Havre High volleyball team has a lot to look forward to this fall. The Blue Ponies return many players from their team that finished second at the Class A state tournament last fall. As they try to reach those heights once again this season, HHS head coach Stephanie Huse wants to see her players continue to bring the effort. "I just expect the girls to take each day as it comes. To be focused on being challenged, to learn and grow and just work hard every single day,"...

  • Northern spikers take a road trip to Arizona for four matches

The event, a fund raiser for MSU-Northern wrestling and women's basketball, has become a huge summer attraction each year, and this year's version should be as good as ever. Fusion Fight League is bringing its top-notch production, and a strong card to the Havre Ice Dome Saturday night, including a main event...
