  • A break from the heat may be coming next week

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Aug 19, 2022

Montana’s streak of scorching weather continues, with the area having had highs from the mid 90s to over 100 degrees for weeks in a row, and while the coming weekend looks to be much of the same, next week may offer the weather-weary a reprieve. In this part of north-central Montana, the National Weather Service recording station at the Havre City-County Airport recorded 100 degrees last Friday, just short of the record of 101 set in 2001, and since then the station has recorded highs well into the 90s until yesterday w...

  • Northeastern farmers face new challenges with severe drought

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

Jennifer McDermott Associated Press PROVIDENCE, R.I. - North-central Montana and the rest of the West are not the only areas experiencing continued, extreme drought. Vermont farmer Brian Kemp is used to seeing the pastures at Mountain Meadows Farm grow slower in the hot, late summer, but this year the grass is at a standstill. That's "very nerve-wracking" when you're grazing 600 to 700 cattle, said Kemp, who manages an organic beef farm in Sudbury. He describes the weather...

  • Gianforte wields 'executive privilege' argument against sensitive records requests

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

Amanda Eggert Montana Free Press Coming into office last year as Montana's first Republican governor in nearly two decades and looking to implement a muscular conservative agenda made possible by his party's unified control of the Legislature and governor's office, Gov. Greg Gianforte's leadership has attracted scrutiny from media, environmental groups and left-of-center political activists. As was intended by the framers of Montana's 1972 Constitution, who included an...

  • Letter to the Editor - Why put a sin tax on medicine?

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

Editor, The Hill County Commission has decided to put a 3 percent sin tax for medical and recreational marijuana use on the upcoming ballot. I have no problem with a sin tax on recreational marijuana just like tobacco and alcohol. I just can’t figure how in good conscious the commission can single out people suffering from cancer, PTSD and many other ailments and say their prescription drug should have an additional tax added to it. Aren’t they suffering and paying enough already? Voters in Montana approved marijuana as a v...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks for help when we were stranded

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

I wanted to extend a thank you from myself and my family to the community of Havre. We were recently stranded after we hit a deer in the middle of the night near Chinook. Law enforcement had to pick us up as our van was badly damaged. Thanks to Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Ohl and Chinook Police Officer Richard Balas. We had to transport our family of five in two vehicles. Both were extremely helpful and friendly. Thanks to Scott at Ace Towing, Shane at My Canvas Auto for their prompt and friendly service. The Best Western...

  • Letter to the Editor - The security in clean energy

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

Prioritizing self-reliance when considering our energy sources is more important than ever. As the war in Ukraine rages on, our stock markets have downturned and gas and energy prices have soared; the world feels on edge. Everyone — both here in Great Falls and across Montana — could use more security when it comes to facing our future. Clean energy provides that security. It gives us the ability to rely on ourselves and frees us from volatile global markets. Because it comes from the wind and sun — abundant resources in Mont...

  • View from the North40: Quirks aren't what they used to be

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 19, 2022

We all have our little quirks, right. They’re nothing to be ashamed of because they are, in fact, one of the components of what makes each of us unique — quite probably weird, too — but unique for sure. In her Aug. 26, 2020, Pyschology Today article about quirks Sheila Robinson-Kiss says one of the keys to good mental health is recognizing that just because a behavior seems outside the norm, doesn’t make it bad. If it’s not hurting anybody, we should just figure out a way to h...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: The rules

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Aug 19, 2022

If you ever for one minute think you are different from other Americans in this foreign country, who seem to live by the motto of “I want it; I want it all; I want it now,” just endeavor to undertake a major construction project. You will discover your Gringo sense of entitlement. Guaranteed. My project isn’t major and it is only quasi construction. In a little-used space adjacent to my bodega guest bedroom, I’m installing a bathroom. Rendering my guest bedroom to en-suit...

  • The Postscript: Piccolina

    Carrie Classon|Updated Aug 19, 2022

I was walking down an old street in an old part of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Brightly colored wooden doors line the streets. There is no indication from the outside what might be within. It could be a courtyard filled with flowers and a fountain, or a small business, or somebody’s kitchen. It is a mystery what is behind these doors, and so, when one is open, naturally I look inside. Last week, a door was open, and I saw a few items of clothing for sale, so I stepped i...

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

You know, Lord, sometimes we need to have some encouragement and tips on how to enjoy life. Found this to share: TIPS ON ENJOYING LIFE: ~ Say something positive as early in the day as possible. Believe in miracles, but don’t depend on them. Seek respect rather popularity; quality rather than luxury. If your mom says “you’ll regret it” — you probably will. Be happy with what you have while working on what you want. Celebrate even small victories. When in doubt, smile. Sp...

  • Out Our Way: Check your tag - Colossians 3:23-24

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

Out our way, we tag cattle with ear tags, which are much easier to read than brands, I find. Except for a short time each fall, there are no open range roundups where cattle from different herd are mixed together and need to be separated - but even so, the cattle are tagged so there is no question who they belong to, The tag is a brightly colored bit of plastic with a large number on it that identifies both the individual cow and the herd to which it belongs. I have shared...

  • Pastors Corner: Stewarding our children's education

    Updated Aug 19, 2022

Impress [God's words] on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up (Deuteronomy 6:7). As parents, did you know that it is your duty to steward your children's education? Some kids are blessed with Christian school options or homeschooling. Many kids attend public schools. Either option is great, but did you know that as parents it is your responsibility as Christian parents to ground your sons...

It's been a hot start to the 2022 golf season for the Havre Blue Ponies. And they especially enjoyed some home cooking on Thursday. At both Prairie Farms Golf Course and Beaver Creek Golf Course, the Blue Ponies battled Lewistown, Browning, Great Falls High and CMR in the 2022 Havre Invite, and after starting the season in Lewistown Wednesday, the Ponies, and HHS head coach George Ferguson, were excited about the progress they made in less than 24 hours. "We had a great Havre...
