  • Valley Furniture wins men's slowpitch title

    A Havre men’s slowpitch softball team laid claim to a state championship last weekend in Helena, and is now headed to a national tournament. The Valley Furniture men’s slowpitch team captured the Montana ASA State Men’s E-Division championship last Sunday in Helena, and advanced to the ASA National Tournament in Kent, Wash.     It started out as a typical morning at coffee with the “boys.” I’ve been having coffee with the guys at City Shop around four years now. We show up any time after 6:00. The boss is there first and the coffee pot is full. “We” means the city employees (minus the clerks), a county commissioner, another councilperson and me.     GREAT FALLS — Barbara “Bobi” Baker, 85, of Great Falls passed away, Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, from COPD at home surrounded by family. At her request, no services will be held. Cremation has taken place. Bobi was born July 30, 1928 in Havre, Mont. She held many different jobs in Seattle, California, Havre, Forsyth and Great Falls.     In the midst of concern that funding for research will drop due to cuts from federal sequestration, a Havre-based program researching converting camelina oil to jet fuel got a shot in the arm from the Montana Department of Commerce.
