  • View from the North 40: It takes a powerful eye to not see what isn't there

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 13, 2021

Sometime a brain makes more out of something than is really there. Or maybe it’s just me. We had a little dog yard-slash-pen thing we built out of 5-foot tall welded wire fencing across the 14-foot gap between our little shop and our house. Our yard proper, the people yard if you will, is bigger than this pen, though. We have a simple one-strand electric fence that runs around both of the buildings and the beautiful, large, old cottonwood tree that provides a canopy over t...

  • Keeping kids in school, safely

    Updated Aug 13, 2021

As Montana families are preparing to send children back to school, we are confronting the uncomfortable fact that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over, much as all of us dearly wish it were. Late spring brought big reductions in COVID-19 case rates from the circulating alpha variant. But what we’re dealing with now, the delta variant, behaves differently. It is two to three times as contagious and may also cause more severe illness in young people. In states with low immunization rates, we are once again seeing overflowing h...

  • Northstars' great season was a privilege to cover

    Kason Clark|Updated Aug 13, 2021

I did not know what to expect from the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club heading into this summer.. After just moving to Havre in January, all I knew about the team I was going to cover all summer long was that they had qualified for last year's state tournament and were returning most of their players. I could not have expected that the Northstars would go on to have their best season in recent memory but it was a joy to be along for the ride and chronicle their...

  • Out Our Way: Dealing with a stampede - Ephesians 4:25 - 5:2

    Updated Aug 13, 2021

Out our way, us greenhorns sometimes rely more on TV and the movie than common sense when it comes to working cows. I remember being caught in a mini-stampede during a roundup. Some 25 head panicked and broke from the herd when someone started blowing the horn on his pickup truck. These were range cows and not pasture cattle, so they tended to be a bit more frisky when branding time came around. Now, in the movies and on TV, I had seen the hero stop the stampede by racing...

  • Pastor's Corner: Be anxious for nothing

    Updated Aug 13, 2021

At Havre Assembly and Havre Assembly Online, we started a new sermon series Sunday, July 25, called "Anxious for Nothing." The series is based on the Apostle Paul's writings in Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV): "6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." We are also using a book...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Aug 13, 2021

You know, Lord, a while back, a friend shared about bearing a grudge against one of your children who was one of their friends, adding that hanging onto bitterness and keeping alive grudges is truly consuming work. She was exhausted and really didn't know what to do, as bearing a grudge was/is hard work as it left little energy for blessing others, praising God, or even enjoying life. Then she read that the only way to get over a bitter heart toward others is to actively love...
