  • Celebrating History: A soldier's letter from France

By Emily Mayer News from the war came to Havre via Sen. Morris in a letter written by former Havre resident Bee Hall. The letter, printed in the August 10, 1918, edition of The Havre Plaindealer, is a lengthy one, but here is some of that letter. Of France, Mr. Hall wrote: I have found France a very interesting and beautiful country and just now while the weather is so fine it makes one glad he is here. It is extremely interesting because things here are so old and have come down through so many centuries. There is a fine...

  • On theology and the Christian life

    Updated Aug 10, 2018

“Now the word of God, profitable as it is to the cursory thought of a pious mind, reveals a deeper meaning to the patient student than to the momentary hearer.” It may be that you need to read this quote from Hilary of Poitiers a few times in order to grasp his point. If so, then his quote has, in some measure, helped to accomplish what he here counsels. We are an impatient and distracted people. The proof of this is the number of people that pass me on Highway 2 even if I am at or over the speed limit. Additionally, our lev...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Aug 10, 2018

You know, Lord, it was quite interesting to discover that the word “enthusiasm” is actually derived from two little Greek words, “en” and “theos,” with “theos” being the Greek word for God. Becoming aware of that, we realized that “enthusiasm” literally means “full of God.” Having discovered that, we can rest assured that God will help each one of us to maintain enthusiasm, with eagerness, zest and zeal. There are some days when we lack that skill, but all we need to do is ask God to help us, and He will help us to overcom...

  • Out Our Way: Forever

    Updated Aug 10, 2018

Out our way, the days and the trails can get long. I confess that sometimes Charlie and I rode what indeed seemed to be the “everlasting hills” for they just went on and on and on. Of course, Charlie knew the trails and so he was well-aware of where the trail ended — but for me it just seemed to go on and on into eternity. I mentioned this to “Doc” one time as we rode up a ridge and looked on more ridges and pasture and cattle seemingly all the way to Canada and beyond. Being a novice cowpoke, I was saddle sore, weary, an...
