"The original fairy tale starts with a soldier returning from the war for the king, you know, so we have a guy coming back from Syria. It was like mid 2000s, I think when Liz wrote it ... mid-2010s, I guess. So, we have a soldier going...

  • After successful fair, board meeting turns chaotic

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Jul 23, 2021

In the wake of a successful Great Northern Fair, a meeting of the Hill County Fair Board Thursday served as a listening session for members of the public, mainly people who worked at the fair, to voice their concerns, criticism and praise, but devolved into a heated argument about the competence and merit of Frank English as the fairgrounds manager. Community member Ursula Brese had a number of complaints, including one against a fair board member, though she did not specify which one. “Things happened while I was working t...

  • Our View - Pandemic will continue while vaccinations lag

    Updated Jul 23, 2021

It’s astounding. Some people seem to have the attitude that the COVID-19 pandemic is over. It is not. In response to a story published last Friday in Havre Daily News about Hill County Commission approving the county health department making new hires to help with an anticipated surge in COVID-19 in the fall, Facebook posts went up with comments questioning why a surge would occur and hinting that the concerns are fake. While the federal government said earlier this year that due to the effectiveness of vaccinations, r...

  • View from the North 40: Space, the final investment opportunity

    Updated Jul 23, 2021

When I see people celebrating three multi-billionaires racing to get into space I have that same visceral trigger I get when I watch scary movies and nobody, but nobody, turns the light on when they walk into a dark room. I know it’s an artificial plot device directors overuse to create suspense, and yet, I yell at the screen, “What the what are you doing? The light! Turn on the !@#$ light! Even a toddler knows you have to turn on the light to find the scary monsters, you moron!” So don’t clap when private companies are getti...

  • Old faces are back, new stars emerge at quarterback as Frontier Conference football returns to the fall

    George Ferguson|Updated Jul 23, 2021

A ago year, we published our annual stories on the top returning players at each position in the Frontier Conference, as a new season loomed. Of course, that season was hanging in the balance at the time due to COVID-19, and ultimately, the fall of 2020 was pushed to the spring of 2021, and a limited season did happen. Now though, the Frontier is about to return to a sense of normalcy as a new season of full Frontier Conference football dawns. The league has a 10-game slate...

    Kason Clark|Updated Jul 23, 2021

After a season that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Havre High football team yearned for a normal season. With the release of their fall 2021 season, that ambition is now closer to reality as the Blue Ponies now have dates and opponents for their full season. However, their opponents on the schedule reminded Havre head coach Ryan Gatch that they will face some tough sledding this fall. "When you play in the Eastern A, it's a tough schedule," Gatch said. • Out Our Way: Calving season - Matthew 10:24-31

    Updated Jul 23, 2021

Out our way, the month of February is one of intense sacrifice and labor, for it is typically calving season. Us “sunshine” cowboys who just ride round ups and check the herds in the spring summer and fall usually are spared the February trials and leave that to the real deal cowboys and ranchers. Alberta Clippers love calving season and make it a favorite time for bringing greetings from the Arctic Circle; the snow can be deep and the temperatures, especially at night, are...

  • Pastor's Corner: Treasonous peace

    Updated Jul 23, 2021

In church last Sunday, we read from Ephesians 2, and one particular verse caught my eye and tugged my soul: "Christ is our peace." A little bit of research later, and facts from seventh grade social studies came flooding into my brain. Ephesians was written during the time of Pax Romana, when Rome and Emperor Augustus ruled the day. Perhaps the words Pax Romana dredge up some of your own memories of middle or high school history classes, learning about this Roman peace that...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Jul 23, 2021

You know, Lord, some recipes are worth sharing! Here's one for any time - even if this one doesn't have salt! Author unknown, it's called Happy Homemaker Cake. "Mix two heaping measures of love with common purpose, sweeten with two full hearts. Sprinkle in a few little ones according to taste. For a rich color break in the yolks of two purses. Do not make too rich as by doing so, it crumbles and separates easily and this is not what we want. Stir yolks in the batter...
