By Emily Mayer The Havre Plaindealer’s July 12, 1919 edition was chock-full of local news. The big news stories were about recent raids resulting in arrests for gambling, blind-pigging, or vagrancy. Of course, most of these raids took place near Shorty Young’s infamous Honky-Tonk. Both men and women were busted, and one special agent took extra effort to arrest a “Chinaman.” That portion of the lengthy article reads: Some of the methods pursued by these investigators have drawn considerable criticism and one or two alleged...

By nature and nurture, I like just enough drama to make a good story. That’s the hallmark of a life being lived correctly — whether it’s a win-event or a fail, it’s all OK as long as the story is worth telling. What I don’t like, and I think pretty much everyone will agree with me on this, is a story that is whiny. A story that, even in print, has the sound of a sleepy, petulant toddler explaining that she can’t eat her lunch and go take a nap because the noodles in her mac-n-...
Dear Havre Community, Thank you to all our community partners who supported our Sticker Shock campaign July 2-4. If you purchased alcohol or pizza over those three days, you may have noticed a blue and white label on the box encouraging you to “Keep It Legal.” These stickers, designed by our 11- to 14-year-old prevention group at the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line and the SAAM — Substance Abuse and Misuse — Coalition, reminded consumers that it is illegal to purchase for, or give alcohol to, youth under 21. This project...

Bodybuilders and power lifters, actually anyone who takes fitness seriously, they believe in the age-old adage, no pain, no gain. Twenty-two-year-old Makenna Cody certainly does. Cody, an aspiring power lifter and certified personal trainer who works at the Zoo Health Club in Havre, has lived that mantra since she first started taking training and fitness seriously. Unlike many power lifters however, Cody is now living that mantra for a completely different reason. She's livin...
Out our way, as big and powerful as most cows and bulls are, they need direction or they will perish. When the grazing is gone and the reservoir dried up, Charlie and I move them to fresh pasture and clear water they would unlikely find on their own. When calving season comes and the helpless young ones are barely able to stand, Charlie and I are the ones who keep the coyotes and cougars that roam the Bear Paws away. “Thy rod and thy staff” of Psalm 23 may be “thy rifle and thy rope” on Tiger Ridge, but the comfort remains...
Over the last two weeks, I have spent a lot of hours following roads and paths as I drove 17 hours to Iowa and have hiked in state and national parks. Sometimes, the path was tediously straight, almost to the point of boredom, and at other times, there were unexpected and sharp harrowing turns where I couldn’t see what was coming around the bend. Sometimes the path was paved and other times it was gravel and rocks. Sometimes the light was shining down, almost blinding me, and other times it was so dark that it felt like I w...
The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the word...
Americans wrestling with religious conflicts in the workplace need to start by doing some math. Right now, about 157 million Americans work full time. Meanwhile, a 2013 study by the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding found that 36 percent of workers surveyed said they had experienced religious discrimination at work or witnessed this discrimination happening to someone else. This sobering trend “affects all groups, including evangelical Christians reporting high levels of discrimination. Muslims, Jewish people...
