The Havre City-County Airport will get a $144,900 U.S. Department of Transportation grant to do design work for repairs and improvements to its taxiways, Sen. Steve. Daines announced. Runway work at the airport was recently completed, said Tony Dolphay, the newly appointed airport manager. Now the airport board has turned its attention to reconstruction of the taxiways and aprons. The federal grant will supplement money coming from the state and from the Hill County mill levy...
The Hill County Sheriff's Office is urging the public to be careful when camping. People are advised not to leave camp sites unattended, not to leave valuable items outside, and to be sure and lock camper and vehicle doors when away or asleep for the night. An incident was reported early Thursday morning in which two intruders broke into a camper near Railroad Pager's campground in Beaver Creek Park. There was a struggle and one of the intruders pointed a gun at those in the camper. The intruders were described as two white...

Aside from some small dents — Matosich said it’s uncle...
"From the first note, they were great," Havre high Band Director David Johnke said. It's not every year that a school from Havre represents Montana in the country's capital. And until July 4, 2016, a Havre band has never marched on Constitution Avenue on Independence Day. Johnke said all the laborious preparation paid off, because the students played great from the beginning of their performance. It's that same hard work that earned the students the experience of a lifetime....
By Emily Mayer The Great Northern Montana Stampede was underway and everyone knew it with all of the news coverage in the papers 100 years ago this week. The July 8, 1916 issue of The Havre Daily Promoter was one of the shorter entries of the entire event, which features just a few of the many offerings occurring at the big rodeo: GOVERNOR STEWART GUEST OF HONOR AT STAMPEDE TODAY Havre Rangers Appeared on War Regalia At Fair Grounds - Enthusiasm In Great Show Not Abating and...
(Havre High School band member Amelia Beard wrote about the band’s recent trip to Washington, D.C.) The D.C. trip was amazing and the experience to march in the D.C. parade was absolutely outstanding. This is a memory I will never forget. This trip definitely brought the band together, and we all became closer with each other. The trip was well organized. All of the monuments we were able to see were phenomenal. The two days of traveling back home wasn’t the bad for me. We made new friends in D.C. who were also marching in...
(Jessica Otto, a Havre High School band member, was impressed by her visit to the Holocaust Museum.) The most memorable part about Sunday was indefinitely the Holocaust Museum. At the beginning before you start the tour they give you a card asking you to find which photo would stick with you the longest. The one that's stuck from the moment I read the description overtop was in the section about what happened to those with disabilities. The photo had a little girl. She had curly hair, couldn't have been more than 10 years...
In pursuit of the perfect flooring for my some-day new-to-us home, considerable research and countless hours of analysis paralysis have led me to this: I’m bringing dirt floors back into fashion. Think about it before you dismiss the idea. First of all, eco-friendly options are all the rage. And I don’t think we can get more ecologically grassroots than we do with dirt. Plus, it’s immeasurably practical and economical. What are the most time- and money-consuming issues encount...

By Michael Gregory National Aeronautics and Space Administration If someone asked you to draw the sun, would you make a little yellow circle with lines coming out of it? That's fun, but what does the sun look like up close? We can see the shapes and outlines of craters and mountains on the moon, but what about the sun? Does it have rocks and dust and hills and valleys? Good question. The sun has been a mystery for thousands of years. In the first place, no human being has ever...

We just finished celebrating Independence Day, a special day that inspires us to think about freedom: what is it, how do we achieve it, how do we walk in it and preserve it and so forth. In the natural realm, freedom is purchased with blood, sweat and tears. Many lives have been lost, countless trenches have been dug, and numerous heart-wrenching sacrifices have been made, from the frontlines to the home front throughout the history of our country. Freedom is costly. Which war took the highest toll in American lives lost?...

Mark 6: 7-13 Out our way, we sometimes discover that many folks west of the divide consider the Hi-Line to be a little odd. We are still laughing here at old First Presbyterian church from the time a woman at a Presbytery - regional church meeting of pastors and elders - meeting in Whitlash who was positive I was going to draw a gun in the meeting and start shooting people. She wanted to call 911 just in case but found she had no cell reception, and apparently was nearly...
It may be the second week in July, but football season, and in particular, Frontier Conference football season, isn't that far off. In fact, the Montana State University-Northern Lights, under second-year head coach Aaron Christensen, will get to work Aug. 5 in preparation for their season opener Aug. 27 against Rocky Mountain College at Blue Pony Stadium. With that said, it's certainly already time to start looking at the upcoming season. As always, I will have my annual brea...
