    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 6, 2018

Life is pretty busy for Ryan Divish, and whether it's writing, tweeting or making television appearances, his world revolves mostly around baseball. As a beat writer, covering the Seattle Mariners for the Seattle Times, it's easy to see why baseball is such a big part of his life. He covers the team on a daily basis and not just during the regular season. But as far as the former Havre Daily News sports editor is concerned, he couldn't do the job any other way. "When you do th...

Jon Tester, D-Mont., in his bid for re-election. "Montanans are capable of deciding who to vote for on their own. • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Jul 6, 2018

You know, Lord, back “last century” what a joy it was to be a kid — laws weren’t as strict about anything and everything. Several cousins recalled their fun with firecrackers. As soon as firecracker stands opened, kids would be there to buy. No rules about noise, everybody enjoyed the POP! BANG! which started a week before the Fourth of July and ended when kids ran out of firecrackers. Here’s one lad’s recipe for rockets: small dish with a bit of water, a tin can (like beans come in), opened end in the water acting as a seal;...

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Give to reap what you sow

    Updated Jul 6, 2018

This week we will continue to look at material from the book “Managing God’s Money” by Randy Alcorn. Matthew 16:27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in His Father’s glory with his angels, and then He will reward each person according to what he has done”. Our goal should be to please God. We are not under the law but under grace. One of the ways we can please God is by being good stewards with good heart attitudes. God is watching not just how much we give but He also looks at our hearts. What is our motivation...

  • Out Our Way:  The cross and the hat

    Updated Jul 6, 2018

Out our way, there tends to be a certain dependable routine to most things. Even when pushing pairs on the Tiger Ridge with Charlie, after a time I sort of settled into things. Although the day may take me on a new trail over an unknown ridge or into an arroyo I had never explored before, I wasn’t too concerned because Charlie knew the country and Charlie was with me. Thus although I was treated to new vistas and even some minor adventures, nothing felt too strange. The pasture was new to me but the routine was not — and Cha...

  • Celebrating History: Russell food administration paintings in the news

    Updated Jul 6, 2018

By Emily Mayer The news in the July 6, 1918, edition of The Havre Plaindealer was interesting in many ways. The now-normal pleas from U.S. Food Administrator Herbert Hoover to further reduce food consumption were made, and housewives were encouraged to can fruits and vegetables to get through the winter ahead. The two pictures Charlie Russell painted for the Montana Food Administration also were making news. The “Russell” Pictures The food administration in Montana for whom the “cowboy artist,” Charles M. Russell, has pai...

  • View from the North 40: Who's the good girl now?

    Pam Burke|Updated Jul 6, 2018

There is nothing like an enforced daily session on a very specific exercise in both patience and urgency to drive a training point home with a young horse and really help you put your own life in perspective. The first point is a good thing, the second point, the one about your own life, is open for debate. Because my horse Myah cut the sole of her foot, I am two weeks into a month’s worth of wrapping her foot to help pad the sole and, more importantly, keep moisture and d...

  • Six-Man football's Team USA still full of Montana's best

The Team USA Six-Man squad stopped in Havre for two days of practice before heading off to Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, for the 2018 Can-Am All-Star Game. The game will be played Saturday at 5 p.m. Of course, Montana has the second-most Six-Man football playing schools in the U.S., only behind Texas, so it's fitting that, a handful of players...
