City Council will be asked tonight to make Havre a Class 2 city under state law, changing its decades-old status as a Class 1 city. While some say the vote is a routine matter acknowledging what is already a fact, others say it is a thinly veiled attempt to curtail city firefighting services and a subtle admission that the city’s best days are behind it. Under Montana law, cities with a population of more than 10,000 are Class 1 cities. Havre had more than 10,000 people until the 2000 Census, when it slipped below the l...
Crowds estimated at more than 100,000 people watched as the Havre High School Marching Band paraded Monday through downtown Washington. The band had raised money to pay for their trip to the nation’s capital after they were shocked earlier this year to learn that they had been nominated by Gov. Steve Bullock to represent Montana and selected by the national committee to march in the National Independence Day Parade. The band members were decked out in new uniforms for the fest...
Drawn by live music, free food and the chance to mingle with old friends, people from Havre and beyond came out to Pepin Park Monday for the 15th annual Havre Fourth of July Festival. At 11 a.m, before the first musician took to the stage or the first hamburger was served, people were already on the scene. Some were early arrivals, many either carried babies in their arms or mounted on their shoulders. Many sat in foldable lawns chairs in the shade of the park’s trees. S...

There were many other bands that were bigger and better funded, but none had the spirit and the spunk that the band from the Hi-Line had. The band will be an inspiration to the entire community as we work hard to make this great community better e...

When you picture a high school football game on a Friday night or in a warm gym filled with high school basketball fans on a bitter-cold night in January, one thing that should come to mind is a band playing during those games. Whether it’s a marching band on the football field or a rowdy pep band in the stands at a basketball game, music and, in particular, a high school band is absolutely part of the culture. Of course, I don’t need to necessarily remind Blue Pony fans of...
Chris Peterson Havre Daily News [email protected] Over the years at Havre High, there has been one fixture when it comes to athletics and that is Dennis Murphy, the long-time activities director at HHS. Yet the man known simply as Murph was a big part of Blue Pony athletics long before he took over as activities director. At one time, he was the head coach of both the girls and boys basketball teams and in 1997, he coached the Ponies to the Class A girls state champ...
