    Updated Jul 4, 2016

Havre High School Band member Jessica Otto writes about the band members' visit to the Holocaust Museum on Sunday. They will take part in the nation's Fourth of July Parade on Monday. The most memorable part about today was indefinitely the Holocaust Museum. At the beginning before you start the tour they give you a card asking you to find which photo would stick with you the longest. The one that's stuck from the moment I read the description overtop was in the section about...

  • View from the North 40:

    Pam Burke, Humor columnist|Updated Jul 1, 2016

The trouble with using sarcasm as your favorite communication device and then doubling down on that by writing a humor-based column is that it hurts your credibility. It’s not that people think I’m a liar, it’s just that they think they can’t necessarily believe what I say. Sure, that’s a fine line, but I like to think it’s an important one. When a co-worker asks, “Do I put a comma right here?” and I say, “Only if you want to sound like an ignorant hillbilly” — whic...

  • Farming and Ranching: It's in their blood

Paul Dragu, Havre Daily News|Updated Jul 1, 2016

It seems an invisible force, perhaps like gravity, or maybe something more like a Jedi force, tugged Jody Manuel into the stratosphere of the rancher farmer life his father and grandfathers have lived, despite his intent to stray from the family business. "I can't imagine doing anything else," he said. Jody went to Montana State University in Bozeman and then Montana State University-Northern and earned a civil engineering and technology degree. But the agricultural producer...

  • Pastor's Corner: Continue to run the race

    Kevin Barsotti, Ark Church|Updated Jul 1, 2016

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. — 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 Last Saturday, I competed in the Jim Bridger Trail Run near Bozeman. I have been running for years but on Memorial Day I decided to enter the 10-mile competition with less than four weeks to train for the event. Because the r...

  • Out Our Way: The Big Nothing or the Big Open

John Bruington, First Presbyterian Church|Updated Jul 1, 2016

"When Jesus came to his home town, his disciples came with him. On the sabbath he went to the synagogue and began to teach. Many who saw him there were astounded and said, 'Who does he think he is teaching like this? And all these accounts of him healing and doing signs and wonders? Nonsense. He's just a local boy - a working man whose mother and brothers and sisters still live here!' And they became angry at the idea that a mere local carpenter could gain such a following thr...

  • George Ferguson Column: Let there be more light in local college football

    George Ferguson|Updated Jul 1, 2016

Some may argue that football was meant for Saturday, and meant to be played in the day time. Others argue that, football, in its purest form, is high school football on Friday nights. Of course, then there’s the holy day, reserved for the NFL on Sundays. Really though, the time of day you like your football is a personal preference. For me, however, whether it’s Friday’s Saturday’s, or the Super Bowl on a Sunday night, I have to be honest, football under the lights is best. Of...
