  • View from the North 40: I'm hung up on swinging gates

    Pam Burke|Updated May 31, 2019

The principles behind installing gates are so simple even I can mess them up. Gates are essential when you have livestock, pets, small children and other animals that you need to keep confined in or out of a fenced area. I have a few miles of fence plus several pens and corrals, which are equipped with different types and sizes of gates — wire gates, wooden swinging gates, wooden sliding gates and metal swinging gates of all sizes and weights. • Out Our Way: The smell of water - Isaiah 30:21

    Updated May 31, 2019

Out our way, the days can grow dry and hot, especially when the rains are slow in coming. Up in the summer pasture on the Tiger Ridge, the reservoir begins to shrink as the grass turns dry and yellow by fall when it is time to move the herd. If it has been an especially dry summer, by fall roundup the cattle are desperate for water. That was why it was so hard to move them away from the nearly dried-out water hole that fall when Charley and I had to call in reinforcements to move them to the fall pasture. They were thirsty an...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated May 31, 2019

You know, Lord, an occasion arose recently where “people watching” was the order of the day. Sitting in the waiting room we were waiting for our friend to be called in to see her doctor. You know, Lord, one really can combine knitting with waiting and watching: knit one, purl one, knit two together. One patient is called in to see the doctor as a lady re-enters the waiting room, having just seen the doctor. Her head is bowed as if she has a heavy heart. Oops — a mistake made in knitting; now it must be unraveled and corre...

  • Pastor's Corner: Invite love and the rest will follow

    Updated May 31, 2019

A few months ago, I suggested to one and all that this pastor is a little off plumb. While that did not elicit a great deal of response, I want to continue down that line a bit here. Unlike a number of fellow clergy who write based upon scriptural references, I don’t typically do that except for Sunday worship, not that anything is wrong with that. Different perspectives on what scriptures say is important in keeping our faith alive. Having said all that, I want to share with you readers a short parable. And while not s...

  • Imagining Heaven: The best is yet to come

    Updated May 31, 2019

Many of the ideas and Scriptures used in this article are from the book “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. Many of us are dissatisfied with the decisions some government officials make. Eventually God will establish His perfect government in Heaven. There will not be sin on the New Earth. Satan and demonic forces will not be on the New Earth. The devil will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur and tormented day and night for ever and ever. Currently, Jesus calls Satan “the prince of this world” and Paul calls Satan “the go...

Yet, with Fort Macleod and Medicine Hat in town for doubleheaders Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) respectively, the...
