One of the guiding principles of my life is the need to always remain humble or, better yet, self-deprecating. If I actually made a list of guiding principles, this life lesson would be highlighted in hot pink. H...

I mean, don’t you want to be one of those Christians that others look up to — a person with a faith that never wavers; a Christian who knows just the right thing to say and do to help someone in need? But in terms of the Christian life, I’m more often like the prophet Ezekiel, looking around at the world and seeing lifeless bones — dryness and death (Ezekiel 37). I see and experience the wreckage of life and so do you — embattled families and marriages,...
As Christians we have the opportunity, the right, and the responsibility to live a life pleasing to God. But so many times what we call pleasing to God is really about pleasing the status quo, our friends and family, our boss, our community, or ourselves. How do we know what God wants of you, or me? The Bible helps us out; here are just two selections, one from Micah 6:8 “What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” Or from Amos 5:14-15: “Seek good and not e...
Thou shall remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Exodus 20:8 Out our way, the best farmers and ranchers recognize the need to take care of what has been entrusted to them. The successful farmer, for example, knows to rotate crops and to allow the soil to recuperate between harvest and planting. Ranchers know that while they need to constantly check on their cattle, especially during calving season, you don’t want to push them any more than they can handle. You need to give them space and time to just graze, lie in the s...
