  • Leaping lizards and gripping geckos

    Sondra Ashton|Updated May 29, 2014

Lizards startle me. Back in the long-ago days when I rode horseback to check cows, now and then I'd see a flash of movement when a lizard sunning itself on a rock was equally startled by me. My mouth emitted a screech without my permission and my heart swung into overdrive. I couldn't help myself. Meanwhile the lizard disappeared behind, around or under the lichen encrusted rock, a perfect habitat for its lichen colored skin. Fortunately, there aren't a lot of lizards in easte...

And Saturday morning, her son Jon Swan picked her up to take her to Pepin Park. Her grandson, Nathan, was to celebrate his graduation from preschool at a picnic, he told her. But it was a rouse. Jon was taking his mother to St. Jude Parish Center, where a large crowd was on hand for a surprise birthday...

But that doesn’t mean the Ponies don’t have standout individuals. In fact, the Ponies do have quality athletes, and those individuals will be on display this weekend for one final track meet as they attempt to finish strong among the best of the best. With just one meet left on the schedule, the Ponies will...
