Editor's note: This version adds the price of the onions. The North Central Montana Shrine Club will be holding their annual Vidalia onion fundraiser, with onions arriving from Georgia early next week. Fundraisers are held throughout the year by the Shrine Club including a beef raffle and a pig raffle, but the largest one is their onion fundraiser held in the spring/summer season. The onions are selling this year for $13 for a 10-pound bag. Shriner Alvin Bitz said they have 6,000 pounds of Vidalia onions on the road to Havre...

  • Crowd packs council meeting about Amtrak ticket agents

    Derek Hann|Updated May 29, 2018

Editor’s note: This corrects several errors in the original version of the story including that a passenger said buying his ticket at the train instead of online would more than double the price. • Harmon primed for history

    Chris Peterson|Updated May 25, 2018

When it comes to high school sports in Turner, state championships don't come around often. In fact, the school has never won a team title in any sport. That's part of what made Eddie Harmon's individual state championship in the 800-meter run last season so special. It was truly a historic moment for Harmon, who had a parade thrown, in his honor, by the community of Turner. "It was a pretty big deal," Harmon said. "The whole town was there to support me and they had a big...

  • OUT OUR WAY: Our Father in Heaven

    Updated May 25, 2018

Out our way, we are used to the "Big Open." I recall Andy Rooney of "60 Minutes" fame once made fun of Montana's "Big Sky" slogan, saying we have the same sky as everyone else. Then he made a trip to Montana. When he later wrote up his commentary on state slogans, he dropped his reference to Montana. That happens to a lot of folks. For folks who have never seen further than a few miles in any direction, the sight of the vast prairies and rolling plains can be overwhelming. I...

Water rights are the cornerstone of our agricultural economy. Without certainty, protection for existing water right holders, and a plan to define the federally reserved water rights of the tribes, Montana’s water users would be forced to foot the bill for decades of costly litigation and risk losing their existing water rights. That’s why we support the CSKT Water Compact and why we believe it is critical that our Congressional delegation act now to ratify the agreement that was passed by the Montana State Legislature in...
