  • View from the North 40: Somewhere between a few minutes and forever

    Pam Burke|Updated May 24, 2019

I’ve been a big, fat, liar, liar, pants on fire all week long. I’d be more concerned with this uncharacteristic laps in moral standards, but I’ve been on vacation and I just can’t muster the energy to show the proper amount remorse. This general laziness also explains why all my lies include the phrase “a few minutes.” “I’ll get started on that in a few minutes.” “I’m just going to lay back down for a few minutes.” “I’ll be there in just a few minutes.” “I’m just going t...

  • Out Our Way: Come back to me - Hosea 3

    Updated May 24, 2019

Out our way, I am always amazed and astonished at how the critters I work with are so much more loving and forgiving than I am. I have sometimes been in a bad mood and spoken harshly to Doc to Jack when they crossed me, I have whacked Doc with the lead rope when he balked at loading and, from time to time, I have smacked him, when I got frustrated or angry, with the quirt or reins when he was slow to respond and I was impatient. Now and then, paying no attention, I have stumbled over Jack and stepped on his paws causing him...

  • Pastor's Corner: A future and hope

    Updated May 24, 2019

The month of May is marked by two important events — graduation season and mental health awareness month. On the occasion of both, I want to talk about resiliency: “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change,” as defined by Merriam-Webster. As we learn to bounce back from painful situations, we find the power of resilience. Part of being human means that we will all experience misfortune and change, but how we respond to those events determines our joy. One of the most famous inspirational quote...

  • Imagining Heaven: Share in His sufferings to share in His glory

    Updated May 24, 2019

Many of the ideas and Scriptures used in this article are from the book “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. As I have aged my close range vision has suffered. I often wear cheaters in order to be able to read small print without great sunlight. In Heaven we will have eyes in order to see God. We will be forever cured of sin. Until we get our new bodies we will continue to put our hope in God and not in stuff or our circumstances. 1 Timothy 6:17 instructs us that God “richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” It is not wron...

  • Hello, God. It's Me, Mara.

    Updated May 24, 2019

You know, Lord, here’s an interesting thought: what we are is more important that what we do! No matter what, there is always going to be someone in our “class/group,” with as much “smarts” and education as we have, doing what we want to do — only they are doing it better. That’s life. That part isn’t the important thing, though. One’s life is not a cold resume of facts. One must build character, a life, learning that we are not the center of the universe. Our job is to show up, to really listen, to laugh more, to do and t...
