  • Free fishing for Mother's Day

    Pamela Burke|Updated May 12, 2023

Everyone can fish for free over the weekend in celebration of Mother's Day, and people who are new to fishing have some access to poles and tackle if they want to try it without investing in equipment. Saturday and Sunday, people are encouraged to get out on the water to take advantage of a statewide Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks program that was signed into law in 2021. "It's a pretty cool deal," FWP Region 6 spokesperson Marc Kloker said, adding that this program runs ove...

  • Commission prepares for flood repairs

    Patrick Johnston|Updated May 12, 2023

The Hill County Commission continues to prepare for making high-cost repairs to local infrastructure damaged by flooding, and adjusted its budgets in its business meeting Thursday for incoming funds. The adjustment, voted for unanimously, creates a place in the county’s budget for the money received through the emergency 2-mil levy passed by the commission when they declared the flooding an emergency situation in their meeting April 20. Commissioner Jake Strissel said it will also allow them to receive funds from the f...

  • Letter to the Editor - In the shadows of progress: Montana seniors and the landline shutdown

    Updated May 12, 2023

Editor, In Montana, telecom companies have been given the green light by the FCC (https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-grants-relief-outdated-burdensome-phone-industry-regulations) to discontinue their copper wire landline phone service and replace it with internet-based phone service. The FCC argues that the expensive maintenance of landline infrastructure prevents the transition to the next generation of communication technology. However, this deregulation affects vulnerable groups in Montana, including the elderly, rural...

  • Letter to the Editor - Fiscal responsibility shouldn't come at the expense of taxpayers

    Updated May 12, 2023

I applaud Rep. Matt Rosendale for being one of the strongest advocates for fiscal responsibility in D.C. As negotiations between the White House and Republicans have had little success, our congressman has continued to voice strong solutions that will keep the U.S. from defaulting on its debt. Both parties admit that defaulting on our nation’s debt is the wrong course for the U.S. But unless Democrats are willing to cut back on their erratic spending, a deal will not be reached. Montana’s small businesses are at serious ris...

  • View from the North 40: It is easy being green, right now

    Pam Burke|Updated May 12, 2023

I love living where we have four seasons, even if only two of the four are really likable — and with all due respect to fall, spring is my favorite time of year. If I continue with the ranking system, summer is third, admittedly a distant third, but not just an also-ran. It’s, like, “Thank you for participating in our event. You gave it your all and were a true inspiration to everyone here. Wear this white ribbon with pride.” Summer has some good days, but mostly it’s ju...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: 'Be Here Now' (Travel later)

    Sondra Ashton|Updated May 12, 2023

Thank you, Ram Dass. I confess, I’ve not read his book of above title. But I understand the concept, some. I do be, and I be where I am planted, and I be where I am right at this moment, glorying in the beauty (even when mixed with pain) I am given, every day. I often say, I am the luckiest woman. However … An unusual thought-want-desire-plan sprang nearly whole into my mind the other night while my eyeballs ran over the first paragraph in a new book I’d just sat down to read....

  • Obituary - Allen Chinadle

    Updated May 12, 2023

Allen Chinadle, life-long Hingham-area farmer, passed away peacefully May 10th, 2023. Allen was born March 14th, 1943, in Havre, MT to Jim and Ethel (Jackson) Chinadle. Allen spent his school years in Havre, but he always knew it wasn't for him. He couldn't quit school until he turned 16, which landed on the weekend, so he was forced to go in the next Monday to formally withdraw from school; a story he told often. Unlike many, Allen always knew what he wanted to do in life....

  • Out Our Way: Why ride fence?

    Updated May 12, 2023

Isaiah 5:20 "Woe to them who call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter" Out our way, one of our regular routines was to "ride fence." Charlie and I would ride along the fence line looking for places where the fence was down. Sometimes the barbed wire had broken, sometimes a fence post or two had come loose and fallen over - but in any case, there was a gap in the fence where cattle could...

The reading at our (Catholic Church) this Sunday are as follows: Acts of the Apostles 8:5-8, 14-17 1 Peter 3:15-18 John 14:15-21 In the world today there is much conversation about how Christianity and participation in Christian churches is shrinking. It seems more and more people are choosing to live lives without involvement in a Church. There seem to be many causes to this phenomenon - ack of relevance of the church in the world, lack of credibility of the church, the...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated May 12, 2023

You know, Lord, a day to remember our Mothers is Sunday. One chap wished to share a few thoughts: "I am made by God! And kiddo, you are made by God. Just as surely as ANY one, actually, every one of us, has been made by God, we have been made by Him and for Him. He knew us before anyone ever even knew we were there. God had plans for us before anyone planned our arrival and He made us so well! How do we know? Well, just look at all that God has made. He continued, "I like...

    Kason Clark|Updated May 12, 2023

It was a back and forth game, but the Chargers pulled off the 6-5 win over Northstars. Despite the loss, Havre head coach Patch Wirtzberger liked how the Northstars played. "I thought the boys played really hard," Wirtzberger said. "We hit the ball fairly well, made some mistakes in the field, pitchers competed...

    Kason Clark|Updated May 12, 2023

One last long road trip is all that stands between the Havre High tennis teams and the postseason. And it’s also one last chance for first-year head coach Jeff Miller’s teams to fine tune for upcoming Northeast A Divisional Tournament, which starts next Thursday in Lewistown. And that’s where Havre will be Friday as the Blue Ponies play in the Ferguson Invitational, where they’re expected to dual the host Eagles, as well as Livingston and Billings Central.
