"And between that and basketball and just having a baby boy, I thought I cheated my family because basketball and school took so much time. I didn't think it was fair to them, so that was...

  • Letter to the Editor - MSGA endorsed CSKT water compact

    Updated May 8, 2018

To the Editor: There seems to be some confusion in the PSC District 1 race regarding Montana Stockgrowers Association support of the CSKT Water Compact as it made its way through the Montana Legislature. As we all know the legislation supporting the CSKT compact was subsequently passed and sent on to Congress. Following is some of my testimony before the Montana Legislature at a hearing on Senate Bill 262 regarding the Montana-CSKT Water Compact. “I am here today representing the Montana Stockgrowers Association. I am a r...

  • Letter to the Editor - City needs to clean up fire department administration

    Updated May 8, 2018

Editor, As a former resident, I’ve tried to keep abreast of the local events and happenings, especially when it comes to the functioning of local government and its officials. From what I’ve seen lately, I’m disappointed in the functioning of the city, especially as it comes to its relationships within the Havre Fire Department. Over the past three years, since Mel Paulson moved up in rank and eventually took over as chief, the fire department has had an unusually high turnover rate. At least 11 firefighters have left for d...

  • Amtrak needs to improve, not cut, service

    Updated May 8, 2018

In an article about the closing of the Amtrak ticket offices in Havre and Shelby in the May 7 Great Falls Tribune, Havre city councilwoman Sarah McKinney is quoted as saying that if Amtrak can justify the savings, it is “probably OK,” and added, “but I could be wrong.” Let me erase any doubt Ms. McKinney has. She is wrong. Here is what Havre will lose when the Amtrak ticket office is shuttered: 1. A wage and benefit loss of over $200,000 annually to the Havre community. 2. Loss of checked baggage service. This will result...

    George Ferguson|Updated May 8, 2018

Around a month ago, many wondered if anyone would even be able to play golf in the springtime. Courses were buried in snow and temperatures were still hovering in the 20s and low 30s every day. Fast forward one month and things are certainly different — and for the better. The long, long winter had a profound affect on Class B-C golf in the area, as teams like Chinook, Box Elder, Harlem and Rocky Boy spent much of the first month of the season, and more, inside of gyms and on...

  • Women aren't getting enough nutrients. That's incredibly problematic

    Updated May 8, 2018

By Tieraona Low Dog For women, iron could be the key to boosting brain function. That’s the conclusion of a recent study that examined a group of female college students. The students performed a series of cognitive tests that progressively increased in difficulty. Those who were deficient in iron struggled to keep up. That makes sense; iron ensures the brain has enough oxygen and energy to perform complex tasks. Yet more than one in 10 U.S. women lacks the iron they need. By contrast, just one in 50 men does. This isn’t the...
