Although spring was a little late in arriving for sports like tennis, track and softball, it's now time for American Legion baseball in Havre and the time couldn't be better for the Havre North Stars to get back onto the diamond for another season. This year's North Stars are seeing a lot of changes. Not only do the North Stars have a new head coach, as well as some other coaching changes, the team is also welcoming in a slew of new players as they are about to embark on a new...

Of all the special interests I have pursued over the years, I think it’s a fair and honest assessment to say that food is by far my favorite and longest-lasting hobby. Not only do I love food, I love all kinds of foods from cheap, highly processed, empty-calorie foods to healthy, home-cooked-with-fresh-ingredient dishes. And from a simple roast beef and potato staple to a spicy, hot Thai dish. I’ll try almost anything. Imagine my joy, then, to see a food trend in this week’s news. First off, you should know that if you ever...
Editor, In my eight years in the State Senate, one thing became abundantly clear. With the current short term limits on Legislators, a candidate’s level of experience has become extremely important. When Russ Tempel was appointed two years ago with just a few days’ notice to fill the vacant Senate District 14, it gave me great comfort to know that he was bringing 18 years of experience in County Government to the position. That experience paid off when Russ was assigned to two of the Committees that I served on myself for...
The choice is clear in my mind between Randy Pinocci and Rob Cook for PSC as I have dealt with both men in the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks legislative committee. Mr. Pinocci asked me to help gather information in the surrounding states concerning the regs. On crossbows. I did extensive research only to find out he never gave it out to the other committee members. Randy put in an amendment to allow disabled veterans to hunt with a crossbow, then when it came up for vote, he voted against it. Sounds like Pinocchio to me....
Dear editor, I don’t like traps. I don’t appreciate an ambush. Right now millions of Americans, some say up to 5 million, are trapped and being ambushed in the opioid crisis. I listened to a woman tell her story the other night. She spoke about how she moved into the world of drugs much the same way that we see depicted on television. It seems glamorous. It seems like all successful people do it. They drink and smoke and eventually take drugs. That’s when the trap is sprung, of course. She told us about the pains and loss...
By Emily Mayer The Montana Council of Defense issued a press release its “order” regarding people who were not working, “affecting loafing and idle men generally.” The Havre Plaindealer printed the information in its May 4, 1918, edition, which stated, in part: The duty is hereby imposed on every adult person having the necessary physical and mental capacity and ability to do so, to work and engage in some legitimate occupation for at least five days during each calendar week for the period of the existing war. Failure...

The meet, which starts at 9 a.m., will be held at the Havre Middle School track and it will feature a number of schools from along the Hi-Line in addition to Havre. You know, Lord, without hope there seems to be nothing to fight for. Without hope we forget: “God is great. With Him nothing is impossible.” Hope, like seeds, can’t grow unless they are planted. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, You, Lord, smile from above and say, “Relax, sweetheart, it’s just a bend, not the end.” And when You solve our problems we have faith in Your abilities and when You don’t solve our problems, You have faith in our abilities. Could be we’re to see the big picture; be like Job who said,...
What once to us was radiance, which once was oh, so bright, That precious time with you, my dear, was taken from our sight. Nothing at all can bring you back; you’re missed so much each day. Seasons do pass, and now it’s Spring, actually, the first of May! Death leaves heart ache for every one, it’s difficult to heal; Your love has left sweet memories, memories which none can steal. Oh, soothing thoughts now that it’s Spring, we hear the birdies croon! For a short time we’ll still on earth, could be we’ll join you soon. P...
“I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.” Out our way, horse sense theology just sort of fits the scenery, especially in spring. I recall riding to an overlook in the Bear Paws that held a special place for me. You followed an old jeep trail a few hundred yards and then took off over the wild grass and past the scrub pines until you came to the end of the ridge. There was a valley down below, and across the way more pines and hills rising into the Bear Paw range. It was a quiet place and a goo...
This week, we continue to look at material from the book “Never Enough?” by Ron Blue with Karen Guess. If we invest money when we are younger and let the interest make money we are increasing wealth. If we run up credit card debt and make the minimum monthly payments then we pay the bank more than we borrowed. Debt can lead to health problems, relational strain, and sometimes divorce. Micah 6:8 tells us that the Lord requires us to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with God. When we go into debt and arr...

The morning of April 28, the VFW Bear Paw Junior Rifle Club shooting range beneath Havre Fire Department was filled with the laughter and chatter of parents and children as they enjoyed a potluck lunch that spans two rooms, talking with friends, and trying to hit the 10 ring, or center dot, on the shooting targets. The poster for the End of Year Parent vs Junior Shoot advised parents to "bring your A game as the kids are shooting great ... Thank you for a wonderful year!!"...
