The prediction is for recent hot, sunny days to be followed by cooler temperatures and rain, leading to the organizers of an event this weekend to postpone. Downtown Havre Matters! "We are so...

Editor, Recent actions by our federal government to cut needed Medicaid funding, historic patterns of inadequate and inequitable funding for mental health and disability services are giving me a terrible sense of deja vu. In 1971, my Shelby High School sociology class toured the Montana facilities at Warm Springs and Boulder. I was appalled by the terrible living conditions and an overbearing sense of hopelessness. I remember asking our tour guides a couple questions: How do you give 2,000 people showers? (Answer: All at one...
In the many years I had the privilege of teaching Montana history, one of my absolute favorite chapters was on the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention. The diversity of people gathered at our state capitol during the wintry months of 1972 created a document that has stood the test of time and been admired and emulated across this nation. Tragically, in this year of celebrating the 50th anniversary of that document, our Montana constitution is facing unprecedented attacks by the very people who have sworn to uphold it. Our...
Fifty years ago I was unbelievably blessed to be the research staff for the Declaration of Rights Committee of the Montana Constitutional Convention. As we approach the 50th Anniversary, I must give a solemn nod to the recent passing of two giants: Bill of Rights Committee Chairman Wade Dahood and Committee member Bob Campbell, primary reasons Montana has such a spectacular document. They had a lot of help, from committee members Chet Blaylock, Dorothy Eck, George James, Don Foster, Marshall Murray and Lyle Monroe as well as...
Press release The MSU-Northern Foundation has announced that the family of the late Scot Strauser has created a new scholarship in his memory. Strauser, a lifelong resident of the Havre area, died in March. The new scholarship will go to support Montana State University-Northern students who are part of the Rodeo Club. Rylee Strauser, a 2006 Northern alum and niece of Strauser, contacted the Foundation about setting up the scholarship. She, along with Scot's son, Sandy...
This time, the conditions should be perfect. The first try at the annual Cal Wearley Invitational didn't work out earlier this month, but today, things look good for the area's best Class C track meet. The Cal Wearley, hosted by North Star High School, began this morning at the Havre Middle School track, and features as many as 20-plus teams. The teams include the Havre Blue Ponies, as well as all of the District 9C, Rocky Boy, Harlem and many other Class B and C schools from...
Yet another Montana high school standout has decided to play basketball for the Montana State University-Northern Lights, and head coach Shawn Huse. Last week, Huse announced the signing of Lewistown guard, Bryce Graham. The 6-2 captain of the Golden Eagles this past season, Graham headed the attack, running the point position and took on several roles for the highly talented Class A state runners-up team. Averaging 10 points per game, almost four assists per game, three...
This will be the final newsletter for the bowling season. All leagues are finalized. Before I post the scores let’s do a recap of the NoTap tournament. We had a very good showing from all the bowlers. First place goes to Stephannie and Tom Klein, with a 1,752 series earning them $1000. Second place went to Michelle and Doug Denny, with a series of 1,711, surprise surprise. They never bowl good together in no-tap tournaments but there ya go. Third place went to Stephannie Klein...
With some spring-like weather returning to the area, local golfers can finally get back on the course, for the time being. Of course, that can change quickly with the kind of spring we’re having. Yes, the weather has been downright rough on the start of golf season. To put it in perspective, the first 15 days of April were the coldest on average in history, with Havre’s average daily high for that stretch hovering at just above 34 degrees. And that was with the 74 degree day...
