  • Use this week to wean your family from TV

This week marks the 10th annual TV-Turnoff Week. TV-Turnoff Week is an event that encourages adults and children to watch less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities. Watching less television allows more time for physical activity and family time. According to the TV-Turnoff Network, cutting back on television time now can have significant health benefits for adults and for our children. Studies strongly link excessive television watching, one of the least stimulating activities in which we engage,...

  • HHS track teams solid at strong meets

To say that the Havre High track teams stepped up a level in competition this past weekend would be an understatement - like saying weather during track season can be a little unpredictable. Both the Havre High girls and boys teams attended separate Class AA meets in Butte and Great Falls on Saturday. For some of the young Ponies, the day was an eye-opening experience, and for others it was a chance to see how they fared against the best track and field athletes that Montana has to offer. "Our young kids were very nervous at...

The Havre fast pitch softball club team got its first real taste of established softball competition this past weekend. And it was pretty sour. Havre finished the weekend with an 0-4 record and struggled at times against more experienced teams and players. "It was definitely an eye-opening experience for our girls," said head coach Kim Staudinger. "They learned a lot about what it takes to be successful. To their credit, they improved with every game they played." It wasn't difficult to improve on Havre's opening...

  • School board candidate says parents must be responsible

Editor's note: This is the first of four profiles of candidates running for two seats on the Havre school board. Bonnie Benson has little problem naming the skills she says she has that suit her for a seat on the Havre school board. She understands a budget from years of running her own barber shop, she said. She also tells it as she sees it. "I'm not afraid to speak my mind," said Benson, 43. "I think (board members) have to have a backbone and they have to be pretty tough-skinned because you have to make hard decisions...

  • Kremlin Park, sidewalk projects in the works

Two grant-funded construction projects - a new sidewalk at the Hill County Fairgrounds and the beautification of Kremlin's community park - are being planned and could be finished as early as this fall. Craig Erickson, the community planner for Bear Paw Development Corp., said the sidewalk project is a 750-foot cement path along the north edge of the fairgrounds. "It'd be nice for people walking into the fairgrounds or who park on the north side of the fairgrounds to have that sidewalk," Erickson said Thursday. "It's a nice...

  • Residents urged to cache trash

Havre Pride organizer Kim Cripps said she has heard from many volunteers for Saturday's cleanup of the city, but more are always needed. "I'm excited. It's going to be great weather. People can come and have breakfast and come clean Havre," she said Thursday. The twice-a-year event, sponsored by the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, asks people to come out and pick up trash in the community. • She writes from experience

Imagine a post-war world, where families have to hide from enemies seeking to capture and imprison them, learn to live on the land, without electricity, without cars or tractors, without modern conveniences. Imagine a family trying to do that in the Bear Paw Mountains south of Chinook. That is the story told in the first work of fiction by a Hi-Line native whose love of children and the outdoors, combined with a disabling illness, led her to a new career as an author. BilliJo Doll's first novel, "The Seekers," hit the...
