The city of Havre also wants to modify the agreement it has with the fire district, with city officials previously saying the city wants the agreement it has with the...
Havre Daily News Reporter Dane McGuire is looking to become one of the prestigious few to make it on to IRONMAN's VR Wall of Legends and raise some money for local and national nonprofits while he's doing it. McGuire moved to Havre a few weeks ago from Illinois to take his position at Havre Daily News but all the while was participating in IRONMAN's virtual races, which he will need to do every single week throughout 2021 if he wants to make the wall. Only about 100 people...
The Hill County Commission in its weekly business meeting Thursday voted to table the second reading of a social host ordinance because the commissioners wanted more time to gather public opinion and investigate possible changes to the ordinance which would require the reading process to start over. The ordinance would make it a violation for the social host of a party or event who knows, or reasonably should know, that underage people are drinking alcohol to not make reasonable attempts to prevent it. The ordinance states...
Members of the Havre Lions Club were busy last weekend, once again helping with a project at Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen. Doug Larson, a member of Lions, said 17 members of the service organization were at the soup kitchen pouring 6 1/2 yards of concrete for a new pad in front of the building. He said club members Gus Korb of Korb Construction and Steve McLain of McLain Construction brought some equipment they used during the pour, which helped. "It's a lot easier with the...

I got to pull stitches out of my husband’s face Wednesday and I was so excited about it I did a happy dance while he wasn’t looking. He never wants to let me play doctor on him. I get it — and by that I mean I get it, and I don’t get it all at the same time. John is, let’s say, sensitive. He lives with pain 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I get that. So a new pain, even — or maybe especially — little pains like from a sliver, cause a sort of excited nervous system respon...
April 3, Montana lost a wise and deeply decent public servant. Stan Stephens, our state's 20th governor, passed away at the age of 91. A native of Calgary, Stan's father suffered a debilitating illness when Stan was a small boy, leaving Stan's mother and her five young sons in perilous circumstances. Trained by his musician father, at the age of seven, Stan was able to use his remarkable gift for music to play trumpet solos in the Calgary Symphony, and soon after as the child...
Out our way young calves usually stick close to mama and stay with the herd. Although Tiger Ridge is fenced and we seldom even see coyotes up there, mountain lions still roam the Bear Paws and a lone calf might make a tempting prey. As it was, Charlie and I were actually just riding fence that day, checking the barbed wire for any loose or broken wire, when we ran across a lone calf. What he was doing out there on his own and so far from the herd is anybody's guess, but he...
Change is a word that evokes anxiety and fear in most people; we are creatures of habit and we like to feel that we are in control. However, in a conversation with colleagues the other day, I admitted that I actually like change! I like the unpredictability of each day being different. I like moving and living in different parts of the country. I move my furniture around every few months just for something different! When I get bored, I cut or color my hair just for fun! At...
You know, Lord, being privileged to read a senior girl's speech on staying active/fit brought back some childhood memories. Miss "Rosie" also reminded us: "Trying to stay active and fit, sounds so boring and really not enjoyable, but it is a really big deal." As a farm/ranch kid, we never thought about anorexia or obesity. We didn't have time for that and we'd certainly never heard of all the electronics that folks have at their fingertips now. Most of those items weren't...
After winning their first home game Tuesday in nearly two years, the Havre High softball team now looks ahead to this weekend where the Blue Ponies will host a pair of games at Sixth Avenue Memorial Field.
